Anyone have a pilot report who has taken an M14PF past 1,000 hours?

Yep. Did a top overhaul at 438 hr and at 1,600+ Minor work on the nose section and 3 cylinder replaced at the last top. Bottom end still tight. Mags overhauled once.  Put on auto plugs and wires. Put electronic ignition on right mag position, (about 40 hours or so - some minor clichés ) but got 11.4 and 11.6 gal/hr (9,500' 2820rpm and full throttle minus 1") on the two legs from OSH.
I have always had a 10 micron oil filter, plus a pre-oiler. At the last top I had Barrett put on total seal rings on standard pistons. I flew from Florida to Delaware, to OSH back to Delaware and used 5 qt. oil.

Pappy, you mentioned that you put "total seal" rings on your standard M14P cylinders. Are the rings, therefore, gapless? Thanks, Blitz

Speaking of engine life . . .

In my never ending long distance approach to building an airplane and somehow raise a family, work, and coach baseball, I am growing more and more concerned about rust or preservation issues with my stock M14P 0 time rebuild. Yes it is preserved as completed by Motorstar, Bacau - Romania, however, as it sits now for 7 coming on 8 years in my insulated but not sealed home shop -- Nashville, TN -- I was hoping to get success stories from folks who have come across similar time frames when running for the first time. I keep changing out desiccant bags installed on shelves inside the wood crate on a fairly regular basis, but with the Nashville humidity, I still stay worried. I would think the plastic (4mil?) wrap, brown thick paper, oil in and over the engine, desiccant plugs, etc would do the trick, but I've never been down this road before.
I think I read one thread here about a fella that de-preserved and ran successfully a similar engine and time frame (12 years?), but would like to hear from other folks their take on this issue.
Although I believe the value of the engine sitting on the shop floor has outperformed the stock market, it aint worth a hill of beans if she doesn't fire. Next time I think I'll wait on the engine until AFTER there is a built airframe to hang it on.
I've asked Cliff Coy about this every couple years, and he keeps saying in effect, don't worry -- I appreciate his experience and advice over the years, but easier said than done.
Thanks for any advice gentlemen --

Figuring the total flight hours for that route is easily 12 hours, 5 qts is great.

In our experience, if corrosion is going to happen in an M 14 P, it is usually in the cylinders. So the one critical thing to do is to make sure that they are all completely filled with clean oil.

Of course the Russians were very conservative, but they used to have a six-year "life" for engines in store, and if not installed within that time it would then go back to one of the engine factories for an overhaul. This was later increased to 10 years.

Yes, but looking at the fuel burn he mentions, I bet he meant to type 1820 rpm.

Also, I wouldn’t run the engine at 2820rpm for more than a few min.  Certainly not a couple of hours.

I flew from Florida to Delaware, to OSH back to Delaware and used 5 qt. oil.

Look into the cylinders with a borescope or bend-a-light (light on end of a flexible stalk) or get one at harbor freight. You will be surprised at how good you will be able to see.

About 6 hours to KILG, 5 hrs to KOSH, 5 hrs at KOSH, 5 hrs back KILG.  About 21 hours. I'll need to add a qt before heading south to home which will take about 6 hrs. I keep my tank at 13 to 14 liters (13 to 14 qts to us) as it seems to blow it out when I get over 15 qts.

Yep, You can get higher pressure pistons from Barrett also. His "standard" pistons for the gapless rings are different than the standard M14p piston, but you get the same compression ratio. I did that because I felt since my 'bottom end' had so much time it, I didn't want to put the extra stress on it from the extra power. That was my call.

Pappy, you mentioned that you put "total seal" rings on your standard M14P cylinders. Are the rings, therefore, gapless? Thanks, Blitz

It is. Actually I want it down to around 1700 rpm. I had an issue with a prop was 'running away' in decent even with the lever all the way back. It turned out I had use the wrong manual to get the prop setting from. After 3 calls (1 to Jill and 2 to Whirlwind) I got the correct pitch set-in. I'm now need to continue tweeking the governor.

I don't remember the times but the manual had max times depending on where the engine is stored. But hearing where you have it stored, I have to agree with Cliff, don't worry about it. With any engine I recommend a real good filter (20 microns or less). Simply keep an eye on it and your chip detector. BTW there is a drain screw on top of the carb, for draining the preservative. It is the only one not safety wired. MAKE SURE YOU SAFETY WIRE IT AFTER DEPRESERVING IT. Not doing so, will cause an engine failure.

That's true. My IAS was about 122 kts. When I was pushing 135kts, I'd burn about 15.5+ gal/hr.

Dead Bear,

Thanks for catching my typo! 1820rpms is correct! Craig Payne just ran his engine in a race up at OSH on a 400mile course at 2400rpm and full throttle. He was burning about 24gal/hr! Of course he clocked 191kts (yes 1-9-1) for the course.
