I've drilled the 7/8" hole in F10 for the tailwheel arm. I used outside calipers to get the centre the correct 1" above the fuselage bottom skin (that is, the OUTSIDE of the fuselage) and took care to keep the bore of the hole parallel to the fuselage bottom. The bottom of the hole finished up just clear of the curved bottom flange of F10.
The tailwheel arm XTW06 fits into the hole, but will not go far enough forward for the hole at forward extremity of XTW06 to align with the marked centre 160mm forward of the front face of F10, because XTW06 binds against the bottom of F10 & of the fuselage.
Do I need to
(a) enlarge the hole in F10 upwards?
(b) relieve F10 & fuselage at the bottom centre to clear XTW06?
Opinions, please!

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Rowland,
It just doesn't fit without tweaking.
You will find that it may be necessary to file a small round in the skin to clear the tail spring. Also the 7/8 inch hole is probably drilled perfectly square yet the spring does not go through the tailpost perfectly square and it is shown in the diagram in the manual page 23M-8 that it is angled through the tail post and impacts the lower skin. So some adjustments are normal. Remember a small amount of space is necessary for the Redux when it is all done and ready to go final.
You will also see that the XTW15 flat piece of metal for the 5/16 bolt doesn't quite line up right, and some adjustments there are not uncommon also.
Not speaking for the factory any longer, I can say what I do, and in the case of the tail spring, I find the ply support pylon in the tail is usually not tough enough for a couple ground loops, so I tend to build the pylon all the way across the fuselage bottom as shown in Fig 11 Chapter 23M but make it just a bit wider. I do this so when the client drills the hole for the AN5-12 bolt and finds he can't quite get the alignment perfect, I come back in and install a 3/8 steel tube in the bottom as a sleeve with Redux. What the sleeve is good for is it helps when the bolt is pulled up. The sleeve prevents the bolt from crushing the fuselage skin, and ply support when the bolt is properly tensioned, it also gives more support for the bolt, retards bending of the bolt and it will be less likely to be difficult to pull out the bolt, if the spring is bent in a mishap...
Happy building,
Bud

Hi Roland,
I had to open up the 7/8" hole (on center) as well as relieve the bottom of the fuselage (rudder closeout) to accommodate the tailwheel arm.

Erich

Thanks to Fred, Bud & Erich for their useful responses to my query. I'm still seeking confirmation from a UK LAA inspector (or a UK builder who has solved the problem to the LAA's satisfaction) which approach is approved and is not going to cause me administrative grief further down the line.

Rowland
your inspector shou8ld be able to tell you, if he can't maybe he isn't the right one?
You are the builder so you will have a pretty good idea yourself. This sort of decision is nothing to do with LAA really is it? I don't get the impression you are modifying anything, just adjustment. btw I haven't paid a lot of attention to this thread so add plenty of salt to my remarks.

Rowland,
The notation on Fig. 4 on pg 5, chap. 32M describes exactly your "option B"...
Surely following the build manual will satisfy the inspector...?...

Fred - thanks, as so often the answer is "read the fine manual"!

Graham - I'm switching inspectors and the new one although fully composite-qualified, has not done a Europa before, so I didn't ask him. As you can see from my other reply, the answer was RTFM anyway.
