Anyone with high compression pistons in an M14P with the Russian air start
system: does the air start handle the higher compression with any added
difficulty? Is the start procedure any different? Any other comments on the
pros and cons of high compression pistons welcome!

It makes no difference at all, and starting procedure is exactly the same!

Maybe nit-picking, but a comment if I may: The subject line is "High Compression Pistons". It really should read: "Slightly Higher Compression Pistons". Smile

So.... Kind of a misnomer. The pistons being discussed are only slightly higher compression, not HIGH compression. I am sure Jill can give the exact value, but it is only going from about 7 to 8 on the compression ratio. Above 8 is not recommended on any blown engine, and even 8 is pushing it just a tad by racing engine standards anyway. That said, the M-14P does not push a huge amount of blower boost like you would find on a drag engine, or even something like a GSO-480.

In any case, that's why going from 7 to 8 does not really impact any starting effort. It's just not a huge change.

Real "High Compression" pistons are usually above 10 to 1 and are never found in a blown engine. What really should attract anyone regarding these pistons is not just the small compression change, but the quality of the material. Especially the aluminum pistons themselves, their expansion specs as compared to the Russian material, along with the piston ring designs. All substantial improvements, resulting in more power, lower oil consumption, better longevity, etc.
