I also am happier with the Maule tail wheel that I transplanted to my
early Kitfox IV many years ago.
About 12 years ago there was alot of talk about tail wheel springs
breaking so I replaced my original tail spring with a full and partial
length spring set recommended at the time. It recently broke where the
shorter spring stopped and transferred all weight onto the full length
spring.
Kitfox offered a three leaf spring kit but suggested not using all three
leaves. So I installed the two full two leaf springs in the kit and left
the partial length spring off. The retaining bolt hole had to be drilled
out a tad to fit, which was simple enough.
This plane is trailered in an enclosed trailer all over the US each year
during which the tail is supported where the tail wheel spring bolts to
the fuselage to prevent excess flexing of the tail wheel spring when
bouncing down the road. I notice that the new spring set lifts the
fuselage a bit higher than the old spring set, which is to be expected.
