I have recently purchased a Glasair I and I have been trying to find a replacement for my canopy gas strut. Does anyone have any information about where a person can obtain one, or where I would get the specifications, so that I can try to get one built? I have emailed the Glasair people twice, and have had no reply, so I am assuming that they do not sell them. Any help would be appreciated. I am in Canada.
Thanks;
Shona

Hello Helicat,
I own a Glasair III, and have replaced the gas spring several times. If
you can verify that the two canopies use the same gas spring, I will
send on the part number and ordering info.
Good Luck,

Don't assume that the gas springs are the same for the GIII and the GI. I can't believe that Glasair Aviation has not responded. They are usually very responsive. Did you try the address, parts(at)glasairaviation.com (parts(at)glasairaviation.com)? Or call their main number and ask for the Parts Dept. They usually don't answer the phone, but if you leave a message they will get back to you.
Best Regards,
Steve

The gas shock can be found at marinas and is used on boat hatches. If you buy it from a marine supplier don't say it is for an aircraft. The reason why Glasair doesn't sell them is because once the manufacturer found they where used on A/C, they shut them off.

Shona, the original kits were produced in the early 80’s and used a gas cylinder from Boeing. They were used on the overhead compartment doors of a discontinued plane. I have had several go bad. Measure the length of the closed cylinder when the canopy is closed and again the length when it is open. Auto parts stores sell these for rear hatch’s of small cars. They will likely not have what you need in stock but will have a chart that will list the specs you need and will special order it. The last time I bought them, I got the company name off the display and bought online. The minimum order required me to purchase three gas cylinders. Robin Young 286YM

Thanks Steve, but there in lies the problem, I am not sure what the best
pressure would be. My most unscientific experiment with the bathroom scale
suggests somewhere around 35-40lbs, but that could be way off.
I will send you the old one, just email me a mailing address, and I'll see
if I can get a more accurate approximation of the required pressure.
