Hello All,

The drawings for the XL specify rolled bead for both
the top rear side and also on both ends. How are these
made and what tools are needed to do this?
On www.ch601.org two tools are described. A complex one
that requires a lathe and welding to build and a version
based on form blocks with a round metal form in it. Does
anyone have experience using the form block based tool
to make the relief beads?

Regards,
Maarten

Maarten, Thanks for the reference. I  am going to try the simpler beading method too now that  you have pointed it out.    Have you experimented yet with welding the tank flange.  That is something I am going to practice this week.  I have plenty of experience TIG welding but never on such thin material.  My first attempt (on scrap), will be with .040 tungsten and .040  4043 mig wire for filler. I plan to start with about 20 amps and adjust from there.  I have heard that some have substituted .032 for .025 but I would like to use the lighter material if I can.   Do you (or anyone) have any words of wisdom?  Thanks,  Jerry

Harbor Freight sell a beading tool. I have no experience with it, but I think other guys on this list have used it.

I used the Harbor Freight beading tool and it worked great.

I just posted a blurb about welding my tanks about a week ago.

The filler neck flange goes on the inside of the tank first. The seam welds are easy if you can see that small of a puddle. I needed 3.25+ reading glasses, might be an age thing Confused Anyway about 27 to 29 amps were used and very little 4043 filler rod was needed. The Miller 200 Syncrowave was used with .062 tungsten, a pulse of about 2.3 and a balance of 5.0.

Hope that helps.

Hello Dave,

I should have looked in the harbor freight catalog first
before asking. Yes, this looks like the proper tool, that
actually allows you to roll in the beads in several
passes. It should work on the long flange and also on
both edges of the tank, including the curved sections.
I just had hoped the tool would be a little cheaper
since I only have to use it once, for one single size of
bead.

Regards,
Maarten

When you are finished with it, you could donate it to your local EAA tool crib. It's tax deductable!

Hello,

Yesterday evening I made the simple bead block press to create the bead on the fuel tanks. The result is pretty good, but it requires a lot of pressure with my vice on the .032 Al, also you have to do it in steps to keep the bead nice and smooth. If I want to continue this I will also have to make a smaller block that allows me to follow the curves of the fuel tank. The attached images show the the little oak bead press block that I made and two images of results on a bending test strip that I worked on to test the location for the fuel tank bending. I'll continue working on this an report my results.

Regards,
Maarten

Here are some pictures of the setup used for putting the beads in the tanks. One pass gets the depth and just used a mark on the closure screw and counted turns to get the same depth each time. I clamped a (1" x 3" x 7" steel block), near the die end to keep things inline. Also polished the tools to get a better surface finish, no marks on the sheet metal.
