Folks,

Looking to open up panel space by going with a BECKER ATC-44001-175 transponder, these are the small 2 1/4 inche round whole instrucments.

Anyone used one, ANY issues with durability, signal, quality control???

I realize that display of becker instrucments has caused some issues with readability ini certain lighting....

thanks for direct off list feedback if able (I will monitor list as well for responses)

Drew I would recommend the Becker unit that has the remote R/T, with the
small in panel control panel mount. I have tested this unit and have
seen sensitivity of -76 dBm, and output power between 200 & 250 watts.
Good side lobe supression, and a very high reply rate under heavy use
without power fade.

Have not one but two. With the backlight function in use, I have not seen a
visibility issue. The one in the 52 has been in use for 3.5 years without a
hiccup. The 50's has been in for a year now without a hiccup. Not complaints
from ATC either. When I ask for an altitude check they have been dead on.
Hope this helps,
Doc

Years ago I rebuilt a Tri-Champ and replaced a Superhomer (15 lbs) with a Becker VHF transceiver/intercom (2.2 lbs). Its only drawback was it only put out about 3 wats power (That was in the mid 80's). Mine never gave me any problems. Becker has an excellent reputation. At the time they were not well known in the US but widely used in Europe. They made most of their market in marine radios. Not the small boat stuff, but the large ship/ tanker industry. A number of governments over there were buying their com equipment from Becker. The first of these small radios started showing up first in the German glider market in which they fit that niche perfectly.

A transponder is something you not staring at constantly. The only time you need look at it is when you need to change it, which even in an IFR environment isn't often. That might be the least of your worries. I think I'd check out and compare the power ratings.
