Hi folks

I have to decide on which propeller to install in my Zodiac XL very soon. I did a search through this forum and got some good information about different propeller installations.

Nevertheless I am specifically interested in Rotax 912ULS-powered planes (which prop do you use, what performance do you get). I still don't know whether I go for a fixed pitch or a constant speed prop.

Looking forward to getting some advice!!!

Cheers Martin

Hi Martin,
Your question speaks to a desire to go as fast as we all do, but the
fixed pitch prop will only give you a narrow range
of performance at top end if you select it that way and if you need to
get out "short" you'd wish you had considered this
beforehand. I've also had my Warp Drive adjustable at the low end and
it will tear you out of the weeds of a short strip
with amazing pull that is not available at the long end of its pitch
range. I'd recommend you consider the adjustable prop
for the strength of a good long pitch or a short one as your flying
demands change. I believe a fixed pitch is a gamble on
one that compromises best speed and best short field. I really do like
the Warp Drive 70 inch tri-blade with a large spinner.
I've seen 133 top end with my Subaru lightly loaded with just me and 24
gallons fuel and 17 degree pitch. I've the thick
HDS wings so you'd probably be a bit faster in your XL.

Hay Martin,
Do you have an English version of your web site. Maybe I should say an
American version since we all here in the US speak American which is based
on English but not quite the same.

Martin--
I'm flying a 601XL with a Rotax 912uls turning a woodcomp Klassic prop.
With a compromise setting for climb and cruise I'm seeing about 120mph at
5400-5500 with a max of about 129mph.
Typical climb is 1000-1200fpm.

The Arplast prop can be made "constant speed" by a small control unit they
now sell.

I know that both Dave and Martin are not in the US so this doesn't apply to them but for the archive...

If you install an inflight adjustable prop on either a 601 or 701 it is no longer legal for LSA flight.

You should also be aware that once an airplane no longer meets the requirments for LSA, it can't ever be registerd as an LSA again.

I'm sure you are correct about this. However the planes we build at
home are not LSA planes anyway. They are Amature Homebuilt
Experimental. The Sport Pilot rule does not require that the the SP
fly only and LSA, but rather any plane that meats the LSA rule - which
the "stock" 601 does.

I'd be curious how an LSA updated with CS prop would be classifed. It
might actually be unflyable in the US as it no longer meets the LSA
rule, isn't experimental and certainly isn't certified.

I doubt it would be any different than a C-150 that you yanked of the original prop and installed an in-flight adjustable without a STC.

Not Airworthy.

I asked the FSDO about this question. I can't find the e-mails but I gave
them a couple of scenarios and asked if it would be LSA legal.

One was an in-flight adjustable that had an out of cockpit lockout that
could be set to turn off the in-flight adjustability when being used under
the LSA rules. They said no.

I also asked about what if I put an in-flight adjustable on now and flew it
as a PSEL and then later decided to convert it to a ground adjustable prop
and fly it as an LSA and they didn't give me a solid yes or no. When I asked about it during a follow up phone call they said they were asking higher authority because of an issue they did know about but they weren't 100% sure if it would carry over to a Homebuilt or not. They never did get back to me.

The issue was if a plane was ever granted airworthiness status that made it not LSA legal it could not be changed back to LSA legal status. The example they gave me was certain models and mods to the Ercoupe. I may have my model numbers wrong but basically the C model is LSA legal and the D isn't. The difference is Max GW. There is a mod that can be applied to the C that makes it a D and if that mod has been applied it can never be a LSA legal plane again even if you remove whatever that mod was.

Just for the record this was the Little Rock AR FSDO.

Ok, as long as a plane meets LSA criteria it can be flown by a SP. If you
build a plane with a inflight adjustable prop then remove it later for a
fixed pitch, and the rest of the plane is still LSA criteria then yes a SP
can fly it. You can fly any plane that meets the criteria even if it is IFR
rated, just as long as the landing gear is fixed, ground adjustable prop and
top speed below 238 mph and gross weight less than 1380lbs. As a home built
you can remove the cs prop and change it to fixed or viseversa with just a
log book entry and a corrected weight and balance, with a certified airplane
that is a whole new kettle of fish that requires a 337 be filed and atleast
a field approval before flight. Mentioning the mod to the C to made it a D,
yeah even if you remove the mod it is still a D until all the paper work is
done, including the 337 and verification by your local FAA inspector.

Check out this prop (which is already available for the Jabiru and will hopefully be available for the Rotax in time...): http://www.silence-aircraft.co.uk/silence%20twister%20propeller.htm

Constant speed prop without controls in the cockpit - perhaps that would even comply with LSA??? I will have a closer look at this prop for sure!!!

Cheers Martin
