Ben,
Some think so but it has been done before if you search a bit and do some digging.
John Lowther in New Zealand flew the first 701/vair about a yr ago. His empty weight was only 25# or so heavier than a typical 701/912. All his buddies that were giving him grief during the build process got very quiet when the airplane was weighed.
John removed the Vair and installed a 912 after the test period, thinking the lighter (but not as much lighter as you might think)Rotax would perform as well as the Vair. Talked to him a month ago and he's planning on building up another Vair for his 701as he misses the YEEEEHAAAAAA on take off/climb and the low vibration, low rpm cruise he got with the Vair.
There are 5-6 of us building this combo (including William Wynn now ) and several are getting close. Alum cyls are now avail (untried at this point but it isn't new technology, some teething pains expected) that save 18# so if you are serious about weight control on the rest of the airplane you will have a low cost PERFORMER.
At the moment there are no FWF kits, you gotta roll your own mount, cowling, and a few other bits so if you are a kit only kinda guy this might be a show stopper for you but in a yr from now this will be a popular combo, you heard it here first.
Do your own homework and ignore those who haven't done theirs.
Been kinda quiet here lately, gotta do my part to keep it lively Smile
LOW&SLOW John
