This should be a simple question for you scratch builders. Where did you get the countersink for 6-W-10-2 (bellcrank spacers)? What model number/part number? It needs to be able to bevel for an AN426 rivet head in 1/4 aluminum.
I did a test using a countersink I had for woodworking, and at that depth it began to "chatter" and it made an irregular edge.

any standard aircraft (100°) csk will do. That having been said - I would only consider countersinking using a microstop and the appropriate piloted bits.

Larry,
Be aware that there are countersinks with different angles. The standard
aircraft one is 100 degrees. You will find them with different numbers of
flutes - standard is three. There are 120 degree countersinks although they
are scarce. In fact the Avex rivets we use are ( the flush type ) are 120
degrees. Wood countersinks are 82 degrees ( if my memory serves me
correctly - might have the wrong number - they are different than aircraft
types ).Just make sure the one you are using is sharp. If it has been use on
steel and then use it on aluminum, you won't be happy.
Someone ( I missed the name ) stated that you should use a microstop with
piloted bits. These are great and allow precise repeatablity once adjusted
and locked up. The big drawback with these is that they are expensive,
especially if you only have a few holes to do. Try to borrow one rather than
buying one. I've used a drill press ( with the stop set ) and a simple 100
degree countersink to do fairly precise countersinks on parts you can get in
place and clamped at the drill press. Experiment on scrap metal and you will
do a good job.

eBay is great source for Microstops. i have about a half dozen, never paid more than $10 including shipping for any of them. I did get one with bad bearings...

Hello,
But these countersinks are made in the 1/4 in thick aluminum,
I made them using a sharp woodworking countersunk in the drill
press and they came out fine. I managed to control the "chatter"
by picking a slow speed and controlling the pressure. I don't
think a microstop is needed in this material, the proper depth
can easily be measured and there is no danger of drilling too
deep.

there is a MAJOR issue here: the included angle of the "wood working" csk and the AN426/MS20426 are not at all compatible. This is the worst condition in a driven flush head rivet of all the possible error conditions. The rim of the rivet head is seated but the head to shank region is gapped - and awful (and blind to inspect until after failure) condition structurally.

For the record, Brown Tool came to the rescue again. I just ordered the #21 pilot 100 degree countersink (CC021) for $4.95 and the standard cage microstop (CC01-USA) for $21.95. John was very helpful, and I expect to be doing more business with them in the future.
