Finally gave up (for now) completing my model IV and bought a nice model 5
from the orig. builder. It has the non-turbo Subaru NSI engine/re-drive
package. After 12 hours of me flying it, and 170 hrs. total, the re-drive
unit suddenly developed a noise. Noticed it in flight. Now when I free-wheel
turn the prop on the ground there is a noise like a stiff wire scraping on a
turning hub. It had been absolutely quiet. Found out NSI is defunct. Does
anybody support these re-drive units? Did Lance Wheeler of NSI design this
unit, or was it off-the-shelf from someone else. A guy at Oshkosh said to
get rid of that drive! It’s junk! But didn’t say why. Does anyone make a
bolt-on replacement drive? Help!

If it was the older version there was an up grade to different
components, bearings and shaft. Although NSI is gone there may still be
some support and if you are lucky a redrive on the shelf. As far as
junk, well I put 600 hours on mine with the turbo engine and not a
whimper. I will look for the new company number. Could be something
simple and easy or not, but very difficult to fix in the air for sure. I
would ground it for now my friend.

OK, found it. When you call ask for Craig. They wont answer NSI but this
will get you as close as possible to getting the redrive either repaired
or replaced. You might find a used one or spare out there some where. I
sold mine of course with the engine package. I do have the CAP assembly.
The number is 360-474-8118. Good luck.

Hi Paul:

The original NSI PSRU is rather difficult to repair. It is not impossible,
though. The problem is that the housing is a solid can, with all the parts
pressed in from one end. It is difficult to pull the part out for
replacement. But as I said, it is not impossible. A few years ago, I sent
mine back to NSI and they replaced a bunch of parts, including the shaft,
sprague clutch (which NSI called a linear device?) and several other parts.
Mine performed flawlessly for 800 hrs. I did replace it with the new larger,
split housing unit that NSI came out with shortly before they went belly up.
I am keeping the old one as a stand-by spare, but would be willing to part
with it at the right price. If you are interested please make an offer. In
the meantime DO NOT fly with your gearbox if there is any indication of
internal problems. Per NSI's instructions, check the gearbox before every
start by placing your index finger against a prop blade hub as far inboard
as possible and rotate the prop with that index finger a complete
revolution, feeling for any unevenness. If unevenness is felt the airplane
is grounded due to imminent catastrophic failure.

I believe Craig was the one that rebuilt my prop.
