Greetings All,
I just attempted to install the factory drip tray/heat shields on my 912s.
Since this information is not published elsewhere, I am writing it here and
referring to the molded Rotax Part No. 874 300.
The standard UK carb heat system I have installed between the
carbs and rubber flange on the intake manifold prevents the
drip tray from fitting around the base of the float bowl. The back end
of the tray pushes up on the bottom of the bowl and prevents
movement of the retaining clip. Also, the tray is too short to completely
protect the base of the carb. Sufficient grinding of the back wall
of the tray will relieve the pressure and potential abrasion on the
bottom of the carb, but t will still leave the tray too short to protect
the float bowl from exhaust heat (which was my purpose for buying
them in the first place)
Since I regard the carb heat system as mandatory for the engine, the
factory supplied drip tray is a waste of $160. I am now designing a
new tray similar to the original factory tray which will work with
the carb heat installed.

Ira: In the Rotax 912 UL installation manual (I do not know what the 912S
says), there is only a one sentence statement that, a "suitable plate under
the carburetor serving as a drip pan and heat shield should be provided".
This leaves a lot for interpretation by those who supply these "drip pans".
The drip pans for my 912 UL came from the airplane supplier (Fantasy Air)
and fit perfectly. I do not have carb. heat. I suspect your drip pans may
be for installing without the Carb. heat attachment. In any case this is an
example of poor coordination of your airframe supplier with the requirements
to properly fit the Rotax 912S engine. You are probably not alone in your
problem. I'm sure others will want to know how you fixed the problem.

Hi Rampil,
I know there are some Flight Design CT's in the UK and maybe you are close to one. Take a look at their fuel drip trays.
It is flat, about 6" long, turns up on the sides about 1/4" and in the front facing towards the engine up 1/4". It is open at the back. This shields it from the exhaust and keeps any fuel from spilling on the hot exhaust if a carb leaks and channels it out away from the engine.

Hi Roger,
Actually I am only half way between Arizona and the UK in New York.
Indeed I am only about 20 flight mi to the CTSW factory in Connecticut.
During my 912 line maint. course with Dean at SnF this past spring, we
field dissected the 912s powerplant of a CT which had been damaged
in shipping. The flat tray is the old design I mentioned in my prior
post, but it is not now available from any source I know. My new
design should resemble it, except I plan to use stainless 18-20ga sheet
and to angle the bottom surface high on the outboard side, deflecting
possible exhaust heat towards the cowl rather than towards the engine
core, gas lines, and ignition modules.
The funny thing is that discussed the drip trays with Tisha, Kerry and
Dean at Oshkosk, and they were all apparently unaware that the
extra 0.75" of the carb heat system renders the current factory
tray useless. This is why I am publishing this info in an indexed site.
Hugh, thanks for your thoughs, my steed is a homebuilt Europa, and
so there is no coordination between suppliers  I would strongly
encourage you to investigate the carb heater for your Allegro if you
live in a vunerable area of the US (and I can not think of an area,
except Arizona perhaps which does not see Carb ice from time to time)

You might consider using the trays from the 914. You would have to work up some sort of bracket or mount as the trays on the 914 are bolted to a bracket that is attached to the intake plenum. But they would overcome the issue with the original trays.

I believe there's a decent pic at the bottom of the first image page of the last album. There are probably better pics in the engine installation section if you want to rummage around a bit.

You might consider using the trays from the 914. You would have to work up some sort of bracket or mount as the trays on the 914 are bolted to a bracket that is attached to the intake plenum. But they would overcome the issue with the original trays.
