Hi All,

Does anyone know of a good insurance company that will insure first flights?
I've had a builders insurance policy with Avemco for 3 years and just
found out they won't insure the first flight of my RV-7A.

And while i'm on the subject, if you have good experiences with a particular
insurance company after your RV is flying please let me know. I would like
to find low premiums, but I also want a company that will step up to the
plate in the event of an accident.

Thanks,
Greg

Falcon (through EAA) will do that.

Can't address the first flight issue. I originally had insurance with
AVEMCO which covered my first flight (back in 1997), however, the more hours
I accumulated in the aircraft the higher my insurance rates went - just the
opposite of what you would expect.

I am now insured with AIG through SkySmith. I have a rotary powered RV-6A
and my rates are less than $1100 year for $60K hull and usual liability
limits

We have always insured our planes, from first flight on, with AUA in
Greensboro. Mac McGee has been wonderful to work with. His number is

Greg: I had Avemco, also when constructing the RV, and notified them when
I moved to the Airport, and told them to change policy to a regular Aircraft,
for the Liability... that was before my first flight;, Did you know
they never did...
In Other words, I did my first fligtht, with no ISNURANCE... I will
never reccomend
them to any one..

I have Falcon, Insurance, now, they give good service.. I only Have
LIABILITY... i WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE HULL, (AS IS CALLED) BUT
AT MY AGE, IS TOO EXPENSIVE....$2,000 PLUS A YEAR,, BUT I WILL
SOME DAY, IF I CAN SAVE SOME MONEY..

So if you want to have Liability they are the best rate I could find...
if lyou are under 50 ,, you will get a better rate for the whole
package, depending
of hours on your log book...

Sorry I do not have the file with me, for the phone no. Check on
the phone book,,
if you cannot find it, let me know and I will e-mail to you

good luck

Thanks to everyone who responded. It looks like I have 4 companies to call,
AIG, AUA, Falcon, and Ace Aviation. I'll post a report of the results after
I talk to everyone.

I hope to see everyone in the skies around NC soon!

Greg,

I too have been pleased with NationAir. Contact is Jenny Estes 877.475.5860. Like you, I had construction insurance with Avemco but they would not insure the first flight.

When I made my first flight, NationAir wrote the insurance with AIG. Something I never could understand was that AIG would not insure the "test pilot" I had arranged for the first flight who had a lot more time in RVs then I did and was a CFI. They would only insure me and no passengers until the Phase 1 was flown off.

Last year NationAir switched me to Global Aerospace because of price. Thankfully I've never had to make a claim so can't comment on that end of the service.

One other important point, are you aware of the implications of under insuring the hull? Also, once you contact one of the insurance agents and get a quote, the competions for your business ends. All other agents will be blocked by the insurance companies to quote on your needs.

The RVlist archive has some good info on insurance if you want more. http://www.matronics.com/search/

Dale,
What underinsured hull implications do you refer to?
I've found the insurance people to have a policy of "honor among thieves." That is, if you have a quote or an active insurance policy, they will not talk to you or give you a quote. I've told them I will cancel my current policy if they would give me a quote. They refuse! They have an unwritten rule amongst themselves to not step on each others toes. Seems almost like collusion to keep prices high and create a sort of monopoly.

Stan,
I see that Ed Anderson already gave you an excellent explanations of the possible consequence of under insuring the hull. NationAir made sure I understood this when I first had to decide on the level of hull insurance. Thanks to the RVlist I was aware of the ramifications.

The refusal of quotes was explained to me by an RV builder/insurance agent on the RVlist a few years ago. His explanation: When you work with an agent, they will contact the various insurance companies for pricing and availability of your insurance needs. After the initial quote to an agent, the insurance company would just be giving the same quote for the same circumstance to all the other agents that contact them. The one exception is Avemco as they deal direct.

Gee Bill, maybe it's the high level of ability and experience of the tail wheel pilot!! .......in spite of the antique tail wheel design ;<)

Seriously, there are several factors that are considered when quoting insurance on an airplane.
Owners total flying experience, time in type, type of airplane, where is the airplane based, paved or grass runway, passed history of claims and maybe the age of the primary pilot. One of my neighbor told me last weekend that he is considering selling his Bonanza because of operating cost with insurance being a primary factor because he is now 75.

It's still collusion. Have you ever heard an independent insurance agent
for homeowners, automotive, etc insurance tell you that?

You can bet that the same underwriters (meaning the actual insurance
companies, not the person sitting at the desk) give multiple agents
quotes on the same property every day when they are working in other fields.

I equate it to Lyc/Cont engine prices; they do it because they can.

BTW, don't let them convince you that the high rates are due to
'liability', either. If the issue was liability, then why is $1M of
liability only around $300-$400/yr, but $30K of hull is over twice that
premium?

Hey Guys,
Another data point on Nation Air. I 'had' my insurance with them for quite a few RV's over the past 5 or 6 years. Yup....they were great as long as they received my premium. They mailed me out a new bill for each RV....I sent them a check and all was well. No problem....right up until the engine quit on the HR that I 'owned' for about 5 minutes. I had a LOT of trouble getting them to pay out....then they tried to DOUBLE my premium and NOT provide any hull on the next plane. I spoke with them at great length about it and they had no explanation other than 'oh well...sorry....maybe it will get better after a few years'.

I went to 'Mac' over at AUA and told him everything that happened with the engine out and Nation Air and he covered me full hull with a good 'normal' rate right out of the box with the next airplane with ZERO hrs time in type (RV10). Oh yea....it was still with AIG who Nation Air was 'blaming' for my 'new rates'.

Let it be known that I am NOT 'putting down' Nation Air....just passing on a few facts so others can make up their own mind.

Rick, I am due for a renewal with Nation Air next month and this is certainly not what a policy holder wants to here. I paid $1775 last year for 70K hull coverage on my RV6-A through Global.
Nation Air had me through AIG previously but Global beat them in coverage and price last renewal. Having the "Big Fan" up front quit is bad enough......you certainly don't want your agent to compound the pain.
