With a 447 and also meeting the weight and fuel limits, who would bother
with the equations?

Denny,

If Bill wants to attend a fly-in that includes an air show, there is a
possibility of being ramp checked. In the past this was not much of a
problem, because there were so many little small planes showing up without N
numbers. But this year it will be much different and non N numbered
aircraft are really stick out. If you claim to fly an aircraft that is
103-7 compliant, it is up to you to prove it. This is why Appendix 1,2,3 &
4 are so important. If one fills these out they are considered sufficient
proof for compliance.

If on the other hand, Bill is not going to fly it into a controlled airport
that is sponsoring an air show event, he could get by as do many others.
But since he is making the effort to meet the weight and fuel requirements,
I assumed his goal was for full compliance.

In terms of fuselage width, I have not measured but I believe the FireFly
fuselage width may be greater than that of a FireStar. This was done to
meet FAA requirements for ultra light vehicle design to ensure a slow speed
dragy design. With the larger wing span or lower wing loading, Bill should
have no trouble meeting the stall limit. But with lighter wing loading, a
full enclosure, and a single wing lift strut, he may find it difficult to
remain maximum speed compliant. The drag numbers will be too low and the
447 will be too powerful. There are ways around this. First remove the
full enclosure to increase the drag. Also, one could add a false lift
strut, and/or one could move to a lower hp engine.

Its called FAA and the ever more militaristic nature of how things are conducted in aviation nowadays. More and more autocratic, who in the world wants to put up with regulations upon regulations, restrictions everywhere. 90% of which are meaningless but if you are caught up in something as innocuous as it can be there will be a regulation that will punish you. Ever walk into a flight school in recent times, everyone is somber and serious, the FAA has succeeded in making all of us behave like they are in their official capacity. Fooling around is discouraged or penalized, as some jerk will find some reg with which to screw you or worst yet your buddy will in great haste point out to you the regulation that you didn't follow in his interpretation. Then there is the ever increasing cost and schedule. None of that is found in an ATV take it out and play all you want. I am sure the day will come that the ever bigger government will come and start restricting our freedom there to
o.
If we don't constantly fight for freedom it will be taken away from us.

See the less freedom we have the more freedom the government has to do what they want to us.

Hope you have better luck than I had. Actually I know three owners
back for my plane, but the first guy I know (who bought it sometime
in the early 90's) doesn't remember the original owner's name, only
that he "was an old guy" and probably dead now. Of course mine is
mostly stock so there aren't many questions. Of the three owners I
know, only one ever flew it (and he only flew it a couple of
times), though some of their friends flew it occasionally.

Gang,
Quite frankly even with my distrust of all things Government, I find it
amazing that anyone would purposefully "cripple" an airplane that meets
weight and fuel limits so that they could fly slow enough to meet the speed
requirements for "Ultralight". I know that "Paranoia is just a heightened

I heard back from the previous owner of my Kolb. The builder was an old German-American guy who died a couple of years ago. Dead end on the history, unless you guys remember somebody.
Since selling me the Kolb, this guy bought a Buccanneer with a 503, and modified the retractable landing gear. Since January he has had 2 forced landings. One was an engine out on take-off. The "B" box came apart, and the engine went overspeed. He was high enough to make it back to the airfield. This past weekend, he broke a Teleflex cable for the ailerons, and had to put it down in a farmer's field. He called his father, who brought tools. This was on Sunday, and they had to go to a marine supply to get the cable. The farmer was great- loaning tools, helpful, and amused. The plane was fixed after only 1 1/2 hours downtime. According to him, the Kolb with the 447 never quit, or broke. This is the guy who flies on luck.

Larry- I think you missed something on some of the messages. To me, this is a mechanical challenge- a game, if you will. I am not worried about being caught out of spec. I came from the trucking business, and I am not impressed with rules and regulations. I don't have to worry about inspections, flying out of an unkown grass field and not going to airports. Ihave certain disabilities that prevent any extended flights. I always had to make things "heavy", so working on a Kolb is a delight. Jack Hart thinks like an engineer, working within certain parameters. I am having fun chasing him. I never had to think like this before. I wish I could travel, but even in a car I have to get out frequently to keep the back intact. To me, the basic current Kolb design is eminently suitable for modifications. You can make them lighter, shorter, streamlined, open cockpit, doors, control mods (Hi! Mike), shape wings and tail to suit your fancy, re-power easily, and you name it. Or, like me, squeeze it down to fit the mission. It's a broad playing field, all on the same design.
While I have a great deal of respect and sympathy for law enforcement personnel, I cannot say the same for bureaucrats enforcing regulations. A lot of them are pure nonsense. For example, allowing 30 extra pounds for floats when a life jacket would do the same thing. As opposed to allowing 5 pounds for an enclosure to keep Jack from getting frostbite. I thought the object was to keep a certain amount of weight from falling on somebody's head?
Like I said, to each owner, the game is how you play it. Jack is also looking at an "off List" item I sent him, along the same lines.
