Hello All,
This is getting frustrating as this is the "fifth attempt" at sending the latest issue of the newsletter. The matronics list keeps saying it is too long and I keep deleting photos to try to get it to go through. I will send an original to Pete and Nick at Arion for their web site and to Jim Langley for his site so if you want to see the first attempt, try one of those places.
The Lightning Newsletter or "Arion Hangar Talk" as I have called it for the last two issues, still doesn't have an "official" name, so suggestions are still being accepted. In fact, Rick Bowen suggested one that is included in this issue. By the way Rick, I still need an article from you for a future issue. And all you other guys as well. Get busy and send me something (with photos) for future issues.
Now that the May issue is attached, I have already started thinking about the June issue. The feature article will be about Earl Ferguson's world record Lightning flight, so you have that to look forward to. I will also try to get a complete flight evaluation flown on the New 2008 Demo and write that up for the June issue as well. I will be in Tennessee next week to help judge the National Intercollegiate Flying contest and will also spend some time with the Arion guys in SYI.
Until later, blue skies,
Buz

Buz,

It did come through. I flew around for a while testing the autopilot; when I first turned it for alt hold, it started diving so I hit the trim a couple of times and it then held altitude. In a turn later, it started diving again but I didn't hit the trim this time, I just turned it off. So I think it definitely is related to the trim.

Ok Folks, I put the latest newsletter (#4), up on the website at http://www.jimslightning.com/html/multimedia.html

When you get to the page, just click on the newsletter icon, (little boy waving a newspaper), and select which one you want to read.

Buz: If there is anything that I can do to help, let me know.

Jim!

Excellent newsletter Buz, very informative, your article also on "Landings" and how to, is most certainly a must read. I would like to look forward to more articles like this on how is best to fly the lightning. A great heads up as to what to expect on our first flight.
I'm hoping Dennis will give me a ride when my time comes.
many thanks,
Pete Disher

Hello Buz,

To reduce your frustration without impairing
anyone's ability to get the newsletter, I suggest
you collaborate with Jim Langley and send it to
him directly, have him post it on his web site,
and then just send a link to the newsletter in an
email to the group.

Jim is posting them on his web site anyway, and
anyone who wants can access it from his web site
and download it to their computer.

You'll notice that he's already providing a link
to the newsletter in his email.

An added benefit is that you'll have no
restrictions on size or number of pictures.

Best Regards,

Jim and all,
Thanks once again for your help in posting the newsletters on your website. For those of you that didn't understand my frustrations with getting this issue of the Lightning newsletter out to you with the matronics list, this issue initially contained too many photos and was thus too large to send through the list. Based on that, I did two things.
-First, I sent an original (long) copy of the newsletter directly to Jim and Pete for them to post to their respective websites. Jim has it up already on his site, and Pete will probably get it up early next week. He is currently in Wisconsin on an aircraft business related trip. So if you want to see the newsletter in its original entirety, go to one of the websites.
-Second, in order to get the newsletter directly to the matronics listers, I cut enough photos to get the newsletter small enough to go through. The basics are still there, but some photos are not.
I will likely do the same in the future (if future issues are too big), but one lister has suggested that I forget the direct mailings through the matronics list, just send it to the two websites and notify the listers to go there. Sounds good to me, but it would be good to hear from other listers as to what they think should be the "normal procedure". So this is a request for you input. What say you?
Blue Skies,
Buz

Thanks Pete (and all),
If Dennis does not offer some transition training for you, let me know. I will notify the beer distributors in Australia to cut off his supply. That should get his attention. Also, Nick has a transition syllabus that he has developed. Of course it varies with the person's experience, but you might want to get a copy.
As to the landing article and future ones like this, let me just remind everyone, that this is your newsletter and everyone can submit articles like this. Yes, I may "edit" them (I think that is part of my job) but if someone submits something - I will most likely include it. Hopefully as the newsletter grows more people will get involved with submitting articles. We already have many very experienced people flying the Lightning that could share their experiences. I would like those people to get more involved so that readers see more "how to" articles than just those written by Nick or me. So come on folks, share your experiences, opinions, suggestions, etc.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Thanks Hugh,
Jim and I have basically already done that.  When I put the first newsletter out he got my OK to post them all on his site. I think that does a lot for the Lightning community. Based on how busy Pete stays, he sometimes does not get them posted on the Arion site for several days, so Jim getting them posted right away helps everyone. As to the question of whether or not I try to post them directly to matronics Lightning listers, I hope that others will let me know their thoughts. I actually think your idea is good in that I don't have to worry about "size". Bigger is better, right?

Buz:

I am fine with posting the newsletters on www.jimslightning.com. This way, you can make them as large as you want.

You might also want to remember that as the newsletter my increase in size, some of our friends may have limitations in cost with their internet usage, (this used to be the case in Europe), so posting large files on the list may actually cost them more each month for their internet usage.

I have already posted the newsletter on the site, and will continue to provide a place for you to make the deposit of this source of good information.

After I get by my build effort and put my baby in the air, I will also have more time to turn the site into a central source of information for Lightning builders. It's not quite there yet…

Thanks for your effort with the newsletter. It is MUCH appreciated. I am thinking about another article for you for the next one. Maybe something on the MGL systems and how they are easier to use.

Jim!

Jim and all,
As I think about it, my job would probably be easier (and less stressful - is that what you call it when your computer does not do what it is supposed to do?) if I just sent the newsletters to Arion and Jim Langley, and let others go to either of those places to read it. So between now and the June issue, all of you let me know what you think - if you care one way or the other.
On another subject, Jim, your idea for an article on your "glass" EFIS is super. In fact, if we could get others to write about theirs it would be a great learning experience for the readers that have not made their decision yet. So yes, "make it happen". Great idea.
And thanks for the kind words on the newsletter. I felt strongly enough that it really needed to be done and knew that the Arion guys are way to busy to do it. Now that I have started it, I think it may be better for all involved that it is not put out by Arion as a "house organ". Hopefully readers will realize that "I call it like I see it" and will allow others to do the same. Thus there is no thought that Arion might be "editing it" for content. I really do want it to be a newsletter that serves everyone - builders and flyers, Arion and their dealers. Everyone gets a voice. Now if the job would just pay a little better.
Blue Skies,
Buz
