Tim (and List),
I'm building a CH801 and am planning on using a DeltaHawk diesel. See
http://www.deltahawkengines.com/ for some details. My reasons: 1. fuel
availability 2. As I've examined this engine I've been favorably impressed
with the design for use in light aircraft. It's 2-stroke, piston-ported,
therefore no valves to deal with, EVER. The 2-stroke design somewhat
mitigates one of the problems of diesel aircraft engines, vibration. The
frequency is twice what a 4-stroke has, so while the amplitude might not be
less, the critical speed might be high enough to be inconsequential. 3.
And, of course, no sparkplugs!

Jim,
I was wondering if you've purchased / received the DeltaHawk engine. I live in Racine, WI and have run into the owners of DeltaHawk on several occasions (nice people, by the way). It seems they are always 6 months from production and have been at that point for the past several years. I'd be very interested in the diesel as well for the same reasons you pointed out. I'm just not sure about availability.
On another note, since you're planning on diesel, have you made any modifications to your fuel system?

Not sure on the DeltaHawk but most 2 stroke diesels use ports on the intake and valves on the exhaust. I do like diesel engines too. Is this engine readily available?

Ben,
No, I haven't received my engine yet. I'm praying for delivery this fall;
that's what Diane told me at SnF. Actually, I still have my electrical
system and instrumentation to do on the plane, so this fall wouldn't hurt
me. I'm planning on going to Racine this summer for factory training and to
help them assemble engines. I'm hoping to be able to assemble my own
engine. Cool, huh! I'll send you an email when my plans are firmed up, and
maybe we could get together.
Regarding mods for diesel, yes, I've made some. I have two tanks, but have
used the "four-tank" piping system, using the other two lines for injector
return. I've changed the line routing inside the cockpit and installed two
3-way valves, one for supply and one for return. I looked at the Andair
6-way, but the price got me. I made use of one of my contacts from my
former life (industrial instrumentation design) and got both valves for less
than half the Andair, and I know these valves will last forever! I've also
changed the hose from the Zenith-supplied SAE30R7 to SAE30R9. Lots more
money, but much better specs.

Bob,
The DeltaHawk engine uses NO valves. It's piston-ported for air intake and
exhaust. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. Oiling is
by a pressure-fed oiling system with an external (no Lycoming problems!) oil
pump, pressure gallery, and dry sump. Really, best of both worlds.
