Out of curiosity, how does the USB input on the XA-300 work. Would it accept input from a thumb drive or portable HDD?

Not sure if you responded to my earlier question or not, but I didn't get anything except
"Be a better friend, newshound, and"
in your last post. Regardless, I'm pretty sure that the USB port only works when connected to a laptop, but it would be extremely cool if a thumb drive or even better a portable HDD could be connected to the C90/4000x via USB. Having a Phatbox is great, but I've found myself a little disappointed by the muddy bass output.

Weird u didn't get anything. I said I didn't think so that the unit needed to have an interface of somekind be it computer ipod or what have u. As long as it can connect to USB. You would control it through that interface not the stereo. I am not 100% as I never got that far in my install the unit is new though.

The USB port on the XA-300 is a device end, with a USB-B plug. It doesn't support connecting other devices as a host (which would have a USB-A plug like on a computer). Instead the XA-300 functions as a USB sound card (actually appears as "USB Speakers" with a Burr-Brown D/A in XP, IIRC). You can't plug other devices into it. It would be like plugging in an HDD into a printer or a thumb drive into wireless network adapter, lol.

Nope because again it's a USB B-connection. B connections are device sockets, A connections are hub/host sockets.
The +5V USB power goes from A to B, so trying to charge something from a B plug would be like plugging two DC-in jacks together and trying to charge one device--it just doesn't make any sense.
To charge your HD3 you'll have to use the stupid mini-dock connector and then either a 5V USB cig lighter adapter (or other 12VDC input adapter) and connect a USB cable from there to the mini-B on the mini-dock. However considering you have to use the mini-dock on the HD3, it's much better to use a 6V cig lighter adapter and plug into the DC-in jack on the mini-dock instead, as it charges much faster and is where it's actually supposed to get power from. It can be powered/charged by the USB mini-B connection alone but this is not recommended and it will take much longer to charge as well.
The mini-dock on the HD3 makes charging in-car impractical as it's stupid looking and awkward; and you really don't want to lose or damage that thing or you'll have no way to transfer to it or charge the player. I have an HD3 (actually two of them) and I don't get for the life of me why they didn't put a separate DC-in jack and mini-B connector right on the player (they did do this on the HD5 though).

Yes I still have it. Some dude was all over it for about a month and wanted
all of it. I held off on anyone else and he backed out. 2 of 3 amps are
brand new, one installed only enough to get the system working. Awesome
stuff, best there is. I wrecked the truck I was going to put it in.
Call me at 703-577-6680 and we can talk about it. Otherwise email me.
I work nights so if I don't answer please leave a voicemail.
