The left engine oil tank empties into the case if the engine is left sitting for extended days without starting. I have looked at the parts manual and maintenance manual and don't see a valve. What does the go480 installed in a 1955 560A utilize to trap oil in the tank when static? Any help?
Thanks

Scott;
I don't know the answer to your question, but I think it is a common
problem. I never check my oil if it has been sitting without starting up
the engines.

I have the same situation with my 680F. It will show a difference of 2 to 3
quarts between cold and warm engines. I always check the oil after shutting
down to get an accurate measurement.

thanks for the replies. Curiously, only the left engine does this. I was told there is a valve between the tank and the engine on the 560A but I don't see it on the plane or in any of the manuals. Do you think this would add to oil consumption or extra oil lost in the seperator?
Again, thanks for the interest.

Scott,
The answer to the oil draining into the engine is. The oil pump main
pressure relief valve has a spring loaded check valve which stops the oil
draining into the sump. This valve could be worn, damaged or have some gunk
in it thus allowing the oil to pass by. It is mounted on the back of the
pump. Be aware that the reason you always pull the props through before you
start is to check that the cylinders have not filled with oil. This happens
when the crank case fills with oil and it gets past the rings. Hydraulicing
the cylinders is not a good thing, can bend con rods, blow the cylinder head
off etc. Generally very expensive. Have your mechanic pull the relief valve
and check it out. Remember to reset the pressure after.
Cheers

Richard.
Thanks for the info. I assumed there was a check valve somewhere. I will look in my lycoming overhaul manual for a description. Based on the replies, I am not the only one with this issue.
