I have a 68" GSC three blade prop on my Kitfox IV 1200 w/912UL Rotax engine. WOT my tachometer is reading from 5,000-5,100 RPM against the Carb. stops static w/the tail tied down. I tried to check the pitch of my prop with the supplied protractor and found it to be cumbersome and hard to be really accurate. I have a Warp Drive protractor and used it. The prop pitch angles I came up with is #1, 13 degrees, #2, 13.5 degrees and #3, 11 degrees. I think GSC recommends starting at 16.5 degrees for the 912. I know they should all be the same and I will correct that but isn't around 13 degrees an awfully shallow pitch to be getting 5,100 RPM WOT?
Looking for any possible solutions, hints, recommendations, suggestions and that includes personal opinions.
Thanks,

where are you measuring the pitch with each of the protractors. The GSC is guaged for a specific point in from the tip.

Sorry about that. I should have included that critical measurement. The pitch angle measurements were all taken on the back of the prop blade at 25.5" from the prop hub center.
Thanks,

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Hi Kyle,
5,000-5,100 static is a good starting place. Conventional wisdom when I set mine was 5200 static. Try 5100 and see if you like it. Mine is 4900 static so I climb at about 70 mph and probably have a little advantage at cruise.

I levelled my plane and made a jig to level each prop in it's rotation. The
problem I had is as the prop bolts were tightened the angle on the blades
would shift. I found out the prop was only about fifteen years out of time
so I bought an Ivo IFA. Now I'm in the throes of installing a 912 and a two
blade warp came with it. Oh my... more fun!!

A few years ago when I had a GSC prop C I made a jig that fit on the prop blade and held a small lazer on the jig. It would shine a beam of lazer light accross the hangar and make a spot on the wall C I would mark the spot and then use the jig on each blade in turn to get them all exactly the same. You could get the spot to move 1/4" at about 20 feet just by tightening the bolts different. The jig was made so it fit exactly the same on each blade and I know the prop ran very smooth. I also used it on a Powerfin prop. Jim Chuk Avids C Kitfox 4 Mn

Jim I recently got a digital inclinometer. It is supposed to be accurate to 1/10 of a degree. Cost was less than $30.CDN. I have made other inclinometers using basic grade 8 math and a plumb bob. Accuracy was better than .2 of a degree. Only problem with that is any draft at all will throw off the readings.

Noel C I was just out to the hangar C I was going to take a picture of the lazer adjuster I made. I couldn't find it. Basicly C it was made from a 1"X4"X about 16" long. It had 5 pins that made contact with the sides of the blade C one at the tip C and 2 across from each other near the tip and 2 more about 1' down the blade. They would all fit just snug against the blade so there was no movement sideways. 4 round head screw also touched the face of the prop blade C screwed in to the 1X4 different amounts to match the twist in the blade. It was held on the blade with two large rubber bands C and the lazer which is about the size of a tape measure was mounted on the back side of the 1X4. I would pull the sparkplugs so the engine would turn over easy and not move the plane at all C set it on the first blade and make a mark on the wall where the lazer hit C usually about 20' away C then move it to the next blade C adjust that blade to hit the same spot C then the third blade the same way. It really worked good to get all the blades exactly the same C although it didn't tell you what angle they were at. Jim Chuk Avids C Kitfox 4 Mn

So back to my original question, does about 13 degrees of pitch sound about right to be getting 5,000-5,100 RPM static at WOT? Or is my Tach. giving me incorrect readings.
Thanks,

Hi
Not sure how much of this thread I've missed but according to the kitfox
manual a 3 blade GSC prop set at 16.5* should yield 5200rpm static.

That's with a calibrated RPM meter.

There are some variables in there like the reduction of your PSRU. My best
advice would be to get a TinyTach and test it.
