Hi Guys,

Just a word of "warning".
I've just received my copy of "Flight Levels", the Summer 2008, Volume 13 No.3 and one of the first things I've looked for in recent issues has been the piece on Commander history.

Quite some while ago, I was asked if I'd help with this planned series of short articles and, of course, I agreed.
In return, I was to be sent a CD-ROM with a good number of photos, presumably taken by Bill Thompson.

The CD-ROM never arrived and I've never been asked for help.
A couple of subsequent emails to the guy editing this section have gone totally unanswered.
In the absence of any definite reason, I can only assume that Bill Thompson, the supplier of the photos, has placed an embargo on me getting a copy of the disk and is relying on his "knowledge" to tell you all about Commander history.
Why? Goodness knows.

However, although his photos are of real quality, I regret I cannot say the same about his knowledge of Commander history.
Frankly, I'm not impressed.
Was the prototype really called the "IL-3805"? I think not.
Was the first Model 520 Certificated some 8 months before it was completed? I think not.
Although the GO-435-C2B was used, it was not until later in production. First examples had the GO-435-C2.
The 520 isn't "distinguished by its large curved engine nacelles ... and exhaust augmenters", but by its fin not being swept.

What a pity that such a historical photo, the 520 taking off on its first flight, is sized just a tad bigger than a postage stamp.

Might be best to cut this section out before these errors are treated as gospel Wink

Best Regards,
Barry

Sir Barry,I presume you're asking a rhetorical question, or, you're using your refined British understatement for diplomatic effect. The reason they did not ask your help is horribly obvious ... as it the result of TCAC's policy of ignoring any resource outside of their kingdom walls.Wing Commander Gordon,Banished since 1996

The sad fact is that TCAC (IMHO) is a business. They don't "care" about
Commanders, especially the classics. They care about running a business
and making a profit (as they should). The piston crowd is not their
customer, contributes nothing of consequence to their bottom line, and
is of no interest. As annoying as it may be, it's not just TCAC
either. Try to ask "new Piper" about J3 cubs, Apaches, or any of the
98% of aircraft ever built by Piper prior to the "new". They simply
won't even acknowledge the existence of their prior greatness.

"we" are just hobbiests.

Speaking of hobbies.... if more people in the world had better hobbies,
I truly believe it would do away with most of the worlds problems. You
can't tell me that someone building a homebuilt in their garage would
ever consider being a suicide bomber! Maybe if our government would
quit sending cash to foreign countries and just buy a zillion RV8 kits
and air drop them, we'd accomplish a lot more.....

Chris-

Hear hear.

Add to that list any of us calling TCM regarding our GTSIO-520K. They won't
even answer a technical question... Pretty much insures I won't buy any NEW
TCM products in the future- that is for certain.

Yes! Even if they were going to use a squadron of RV8s to wage Jihad on us, their wives would kill them first for spending so much time "on that damn airplane you love more than me."

One major world's problems solved.
