Hi everyone, I am joining the world of Zenith 701 on Saturday. My question is, does anyone fly at gross weight with a Revmaster 75 hp direct drive. I had planned on taking a buddy with me to pick it up, and am curious if anyone else is flying grossed out.
The owner can't answer the question because he has just flown the 40 hours off, and all have been pilot only.
Any thoughts? Grass at 400 msl about 2200 feet long.
(I now fly a Kitfox 1 with 532 rotax that will do this.)

Thanks Dwight

Dwight,

I'm not too sure how many Revmaster powered 701 owners you will find on this list. But, I can tell you the 701 will fly well at gross, W&B considered.

It's all about thrust. You might experiment with first yourself, then maybe 100 lbs of dead weight in the right seat, then add 50 more lbs. etc. till you get to gross.

email me at twalker(at)cableone.net if you want more info.

Tommy, Dwight, and all,
I read somewhere, of a procedure to add more and more weight until gross, was part of the 40hr Phase I flight testing.
I had planned on adding (in 20# increments) to the passenger seat, and then go do plane performance with the added weight. Then land, and add another 20#, and repeat all tests.
Isn't this part of the Phase I testing, or was I just thinking it was (which I plan on doing anyway)?

Yes it is a part of our Phase I testing. We did it. Used 50lb sacks of
fertilizer and a couple of 25lb weights.

I was under the impression that was what Phase I testing was all about, flying the airplane at all configurations in order to test climb, stall, turns, etc....

We certified our airplane's VX, VY, etc at gross and it is a part of our log book entry at the conclusion of Phase I.....

Very Happy I now am a 701 owner. Flew it over 200 miles home.
As it is, it will not carry 2 adults. propped wrong) short 300 rpm on take off and climb out. And uses fuel from the right tank not the left, found out if you want them to run even then turn one off until the other catches up. (just like a Cherokee) All in all awesome aircraft! Already got 5 hours in it.

Congrats on your purchase Dewight!
Please when you get things figured out, could you post some performance specs? We don't get a lot of solid info on non Rotax engines here. And I'm curious.

Thanks loads and have fun!

I'll second that....info on your experiences welcome. FWIW I was short 2 - 300 rpm with my Jabiru prop for the first 200 hrs then I had a more suitable prop made. Now climbs at 3200 rpm on some days it can get over 3300. this prop is 64 x 30" wood looks similar to the Sensenich that is available in US. For the revmaster it might have to be a smaller dia. because of higher rpm. Every inch off the dia needs an extra 2" to the pitch for same engine load.

The prop change was the turning point in the development of the powerplant for me. Until that time I did not know if the engine was short due to wrong intake, carb or exhaust.

The prop is, I think 60 x 32 Prince P Tip. I haven't sent it back for rework. I am having to much fun flying it! It will get off the ground in about 300' and climb about 600 fpm, I know this is short of everyone else's performance.
The exhaust Left is running 1285 deg. Right is 950 deg. Heads, left 290 deg and right is 180 deg. It is consuming 5 gals per hour and with the current prop cruise is 70 mph at 2800 rpm.
I hope a pitch change will bring rpm's up 300 more which would be 3200
This is all I know about it right now. (It sure is a ton of fun to fly!)
The Revmaster is a great engine, I had one in a Sonerai. It is priced right also.

That 75hp Revmaster is basiclly a 2180cc Type 1 VW, correct? If so, you may want to look into getting a redrive from Valley Engineering or Great Plains Aviation Service (GPAS sells the Valley Engineering Redrive) for about $1500. It will allow you to swing a much bigger prop and also increase your hp to 100-105hp. Valley Engineering even sells a complete firewall forward package for the 701, although since you already have the engine you wont need it.

And, that will bump you about 20+ hp. Of the two I like Valley's best,
they use serpentine belts with a back side slack pulley. It allows
compensation for the power pulses. A cog belt that GP uses is almost
the same as having a direct drive, no give at all. On the other hand
the VW set at low compression doesn't have bad pulses anyway. You
could live with it, but why should you?

I just bought a drive system from GP and it had the serpentine type belts, not cog.

did. Larry

GPAS now sells the Valley Engineering Redrive, so whether you buy from GPAS or valley engineering you get the same redrive. Valley goes so far as to sell a complete firewall forward package. I really like their redrive and have not found any bad words about it from folks that have flown behind it.

I wonder if one could use that redrive vw to power a 750, since it produces 100+ hp.

Crying or Very sad After some checking with Revmaster, the Great Plains and the Valley Engineering does not fit, because the Revmaster has a 4 bearing crank unlike the stock 3 bearing crank of the VW. The lower pulley would have to be designed different. Maybe Revmaster will come up with a Redrive.

You might want to consider a planetary re drive from Marvin Currie. Of
course you have to turn your engine around. It bolts to the flywheel
end. I really like mine. If you are interested, e-mail me and I will
put you in contact. It cost less too. Larry, N1345L

The Revmaster has a starter, dual mag and alternator on the flywheel end. I would hate to give up all them nice features. Thanks for the thought Larry. Confused
