Ladies/Gents:

Started hanging the wings on the 701 fuselage last week. All went perfectly until I got to the front struts. Mine are the one-piece factory units and like a lot of others on the list found, the angle of the tabs on the end are off by maybe 4 degrees. Just enough I could torque it on with a pipe wrench, but too far off to build it that way. Exactly the same case on both wings, as if they needed a left-side and right-side version. The back struts fit -perfectly-.

Called Zenith and their opinion is that the misalignment is caused by slight misplacement of the landing gear fitting. Maybe, but I normally know it when I've dorked up a part, plus that would have messed up the back struts too. Anyway, I'm out over $100 buck for the 2-piece conversion fittings.

Does anyone know of anybody whose one-piece front strut fittings went on without having to heat/torque/convert etc them to fit?

Mine went on without a problem. I had a one piece strut, although I've seen
some two piece ones at Oshkosh, and I think also on the "Homebuilt Help"
series.
I always wished that they had come with some kind of an adjustable end on
them. Once you drill the holes they are fixed, so better drill the holes
correct the first time!

Just thinking out loud here but if you're out only about 4 degrees you might
consider getting things bolted up under strain and heating the strut close
to one end until strain is relieved. TWO torches would be much better. When
you consider that the fittings were WELDED on to each end....... well you
get the idea, I'd relieve the strain over several inches AT ONCE so as to
put as little a twist over as long a section as practical. SUPPORT the wing
while you do this so you don't have to fix ANOTHER problem. My 2 cents and
overpriced at that.

I had the exact same problem. I bought the 4 ends from ZAC, I believe the
fronts are different from the backs (it's been awhile) and cut the top ends
off the original one piece struts and then slipped the new end over the
tube, drilled and bolted. It's a much better system.

Ours were off as well, Zenith replaced them with correct ones that matched
our measurements. This was in 2004.

I also had the same prob., with either one or both front struts.
Heated (jigged) over a 1 ft area and four degrees correction felt very minor.
When I did this I had already ordered one or two two-piece struts (front only? Single? Both? Can't remember). I have it (them?) in orig packaging at the hangar, if it would help, email me..

Wow! I must have gotten lucky! Mine fit perfect once I dialed in the
dihedral. The only thing I wondered about was the inability to adjust for
any wing heavy condition or to rig it a bit different if necessary. But my
heart was in my mouth when I drilled all the holes! Whew!
But it flew straight and I didn't even have to adjust the flapperons or
anything else.
A quick flying report - after 15 hours and the initial CG adjustment it
flies perfectly! Only a few little things to tweak up! It'll fly hands and
feet off for miles in still air!

Thanks for all the good feedback. Don't have enough burners or hands to do a proper heat/torque adjustment on them so I went ahead and put on the two-piece conversion ends from Zenith. They'll add a little weight over the one-piece units but they definitely go on nice.
