After 33 months of building, my RV-8A QB flew on Oct. 26. I have now fully experienced the RV grin!!
I’m almost halfway through Phase I testing and am looking for a paint shop. I’m based at Lancaster, SC (LKR) and would prefer something relatively close. I called a shop at Salisbury, not have not heard back.
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks!

Congratulations Lee on completing your 8A and a successful first flight.

My paint shop recommendation is a caution NOT to use Legends in Aiken SC. They paint many airplanes and some appear to be a 7/ 8 out of 10. But, they have a high labor turn over and they do not understand how E-AB airplanes are viewed/examined - gross lack of attention to details. If you would like more details give me a call. 704 953-5791.

Hi Lee,

Larry Bowen Larry(at)bowenaero.com (Larry(at)bowenaero.com) had his RV-8 painted at Salisbury. Not sure he was real happy with the outcome but you should ask Larry. Why do you need to have it done nearby? If I ever do this again I will be flying to Ft Worth to have GLO Custom Utseydjdist(at)bellsouth.net (Utseydjdist(at)bellsouth.net) just got his plane back from GLO. Its at Rock Hill airport.

It is featured as the November calendar picture for Vans Air Force http://vansairforce.net/wallpaper_instructions.htm
I saw it in person last week and it is awesome. Those guys at GLO paint a lot of RV's and know what they are doing. Only drawback is the 12-month wait. They are busy?

If you are not willing to wait 12 months I suggest you go to a few fly-ins and find some RV's with awesome paint. Most of them are probably painted by the owners, but a few may lead you to a good paint shop. Don't worry about the distance. At 200 MPH you will be there in no time!

Lee,
I ditto the comment made by Dale about Legends in Aiken. I wish I had spent the extra effort to check more thoroughly for a quality paint shop when I had my RV-7 painted. I went for convenience and the price was lower than others, and wasn’t real happy in the end. Trust me, even if you have to fly 1500 miles, in the long run you will be glad you made the effort. I heard Salisbury wasn’t very good as well. A large volume GA paint shop is not what I would recommend.
Is the Blue Sky Aviation that I’ve read in other posts located near Wilmington? Because if it is, I was down there and saw some of their work in progress (GA planes) and was not very impressed.

Congrats on completing your project.

My first RV was painted at RUQ, and I was not pleased with the experience. Your unreturned call is a sign. You can do better.

I plan on going to GLO in TX to have my second RV painted. They seem to have it down to a science.

What’s GLO charging these days? I got an impression they’re on their way to outprice even Bill Gates… someone even mentioned a 10k number the other day.. I’m starting to like that Goose Creek paintjob on my plane.. J

We have many experiences with Grady (GLO Custom Aircraft) in Fort Worth. All the planes built in our shop there were painted by him and many, many other planes in TX as well as all over the country. He only does RVs now and has a reputation far and wide. He does absolutely the best job I've seen anywhere at any. We painted our first two planes ourselves and had Grady paint this last one. What a world of difference! Worth every penny and so many super compliments! He is super to work with and sometimes can work you in the schedule earlier should someone else not be ready. After all the hard work you have done to build this plane, it is worth the best paint job you can find. If you would like to hear more, please give George a call. He can tell you many specifics that will sell you for sure.

Rad,
Hi! Grady charges by the complexity of the job. I think the base price includes base color and two accents. Checkerboards, extra colors, stuff like that is additional cost. The 10K may have been for a -10 - a lot more plane than our 2 seaters! Hope this helps.
