All C
I know there are a lot of veteran's that frequent this site.  I just wanted to say thank you for your service to our great country.

I am currently in Colorado (Canon City) attending the funeral of my wife's grandfather.  I don't think that he would have wanted anybody to lie about him and say that he was a great family man C or a good church going fellow C but he was a veteran and served his country to the best of his abilities.  His name was William "Bill" Abercrombie. He flew PT-19's C PT-22's C PT-23's C L-5's C AT-6's C P-51's C P-40's C and O-??'s.  He transitioned to the Lbirds and Observation aircraft when he had a hearing issue that kept him from flying high.  Even though going from a hot P-51 to an Lbird wouldn't be most people's choice C it kept him in the air and in the Army Air Corp/Air Force.  His service will be on Veteran's Day which I think is fitting.  It is sad to see C but all of his old war buddies are gone already.  I don't guess that you can really ever say happy Veteran's Day C but I just wanted to pass along my respects to all those C both young and old who are active C reserve C guard C or retired from the services.  Brian W.

Brian,
Great thoughts and your wife's grandfather sounds like someone that we would all like to sit down with and hear some of his stories about the great aircraft he has flown. Since he flew fighters I will be sure to "throw a nickel on the grass" for him.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Thanks everybody C
I've got to say that seeing the color guard present the flag to the widow on Veteran's Day was pretty emotional.  We went to the Veteran's nursing home in Florence C CO the other day.  It was named after Bruce McCandless; both the original and II.  For those of you who may know C particularly the 1st was a real American hero and the son was an astronaut and accomplished pilot.  Anyhow C in looking through some of his personal effects we found an old pilot's log book beside the bed where he passed away.  I took pictures of all of the pages and in the near future will go through and read all the entries.  One thing that I did notice and think is completely applicable to this forum is that from flight 1 was an entry of forced landings practice.  Almost every line up until he was flying fighters contains the same.  I know that back then they probably actually killed the engine C but the idea today is the same.  Practice those turn-backs and land straight aheads.  Brian W.
