Have any of you RV-10 builders experimented with GPS antennas installed in the overhead console? (i.e. inside the cabin but not up on the dash) I am wondering if the fiberglass cabin cover impedes the signal. I want to hide the two GPSMAP 496 antennas. Any ideas?

Chase, here's a link to an Archive thread that deals with the same
questions you are asking.

http://www.matronics.com/searching/getmsg_script.cgi?INDEX 4874467?KEYS=antenna_&_fiberglass?LISTNAME=RV10?HITNUMBER=54?SERIAL=0428527735?SHOWBUTTONS=YES

In the end I dropped the gyro stabilized gimble approach and mounted
them to the top of the Cabin Cover

I mounted the 496 antennas under the engine cowling; working fine so far at
90 hours.

Currently vacationing in GA on St. Simons Island with friends, off to Ft.
Meyers tomorrow for a few days.

What a magic carpet.

I just tried th elink and it seems to work, perhaps the email program
warpped it and you only got a part of it. As a back up go to the
Matronics archive and search on 'fiberglass and antenna placement' there
are a number of posts around Sep 07 that are relevant.

I think 'maybe' should be used instead of 'will'. The heat in the
glareshield area on a sunny day can get pretty high too. I don't think
that area in the picture gets as hot as folks think (but I have no data)
because most of the engine heat goes out through the cowl exit in
flight. If baffled good. after shutdown, convection should take most of
that heat and exit through the inlets. I'm in the habit of opening up
the oil filler door after I park and really don't get much heat exiting
there (but I think any help is good!). Heat isn't kind to electronics,
especially semiconductors, but semiconductors have 'matured' over the
years and are increasingly more tolerant of heat. Someday I'll try and
measure the temps ...... but those 'somedays' seem to take forever!!!
