OK, speaking of doors ..... has anyone suffered damage because the wind
caught the doors? Any other concerns with the doors??? Any 'fixes'
that you'd do when you're assembling the doors??? I'm getting ready
to do mine ..... educate me!!!

Best add a strap you can hold onto when you open it. Also use it to
pull it closed.

I don't let my passengers open the door if there's any wind to speak
of.....

The adjusting and making the doors line up will require you to "fix" that
fit after you trim everything
The trimming to get the doors to close will require a whole lot of "fixing"
the aligning/leveling of the doors with the canopy will require lots of
"fixing" with flox and micro
The whole door is a "fix", expect lots of hours fixing it to fit.
My advice concerning the seals is buy a smaller one than what Van's thinks
will work, it's pretty sad to see perfectly fitting doors not fit at all
after installing the seals and having to start all over again trying to
"fix" it to fit..
Have fun! I just finished mine took months to complete, but can be done in 1
month non stop, aka- I took breaks between pages to let things set and
replace electric tools that the composite cutting and mainly sanding
destroyed, .

We did a repair for a lucky customer whose door came open just after
take-off. He was able to land straight ahead. The door opened all the way,
broke the gas strut brackets off the door, but otherwise had no other
damage. We did a very thorough inspection of the hinges and other attach
structure and it was all fine.

I taxi with the doors open all the time. I think opening the doors in a
crosswind would be pretty safe, just a hassle because of all the other
wind-related issues, but I don't think you'd break anything.

think of it this way..

expect the worst, like my fixing, and be pleasantly surprised when you
discover I had no idea what I was doing and you get it done without any
issues. Sure beats me telling you its easy; just trim, tuck and snip snip
and your done.
You'll thank me one day Wink

If I was going o do them again,,,, GOD forbid, I would insert a strengthening plate aft of the door handle.  Then you'd have something to actually fasten a strap to.
My 2 cents.

As for doors...

It takes a very long time to get them to fit perfectly C like sailplane quality.

As mentioned C I put an additional hardpoint(hardwood block) in the leading edge C above the pin location C so I could instal a locking mechanism C like that on the baggage door.

I put an additional 6"X6" spider foam block in the rear area of the door above the rear pin location.

Everything was verified to fit prior to lamination of the door halves on the fuse. Windows where later laminated on the door with the doors on the fuse.

In the rear additional foam C one should put a hardpiont in that location( either hardpoint only to screw a fastener into or put the fastener into the door before laminating the halve for the strap that will be used to pull the door closed.

That additional foam will keep the rear half of the door from being so flimsy or compressible from the in or outside.

DId anyone notice that the canopy's Rt front portion which attaches to the fuse stand proud and therefore might makes the Rt door stand more proad where the door transitions from the canopy to the metal fuse???????????????????Or was my conopy removed from the mold a little too early and got warped??? Left side was dead on.

Let me pass on the report I got from an RV-10 owner concerning the "Lose of
Door in Flight" situation. The part I like was the statement 'the plane flew
fine.'
Albert Gardner
Yuma, AZ

"After the P seals are added to the doors it can be rather hard to close
them. Since the rear latch is difficult to see and you pull the door closed
from the forward edge the rear pin is the most likely to not be engaged. My
passenger failed to close it properly and I did not check it before
take-off. Immediately after rotation and within 200' of the ground there was
a loud bang and it became very noisy and windy. The plane flew fine, I kept
it to about 90kts, did a 180 and landed without further incident. The door
pulled through the bolts at the hinge and the gas strut broke loose both at
the door and cabin attach points. The door halves had mostly delaminated,
the window was broken, and the inner shell had broken through at the curve
but was easily repairable. There was no damage to the empennage."
