I am working on a 601 with a Jabiru 3300, Dynon D180. I am using the Jabiru tach magnetic pickup sensor that senses the two tabs on the flywheel.
The Dynon instructions are not clear on the use of a resistor in this installation. The instructions are clear if you use the P-lead (then you use a 30K resistor), but nothing is said if you use this pickup sensor.
Is there no resistor used with this sensor? I tried a 30K and the tach gives the wrong indication with that resistor.

Doug,

I can't help you with getting the flywheel pickups to give you a tach indication. My suggestion is to use one of the alternator output wires as suggested in the Dynon installation manual. This works very well for me. It is accurate and stable when compared to an independant prop tach. The Dynon tach set-up for this configuration is 6 pulses per rev.

Dave:
We tried this first and couldn't get it to work either (thus the change to the sensor). The Dynon unit was sent back and it checked out fine. I suspect a power or grounding issue is at fault. Do you use any filtering capacitor or other conditioning on your electrical system?

Doug,

I tee'd into one of the big white alternator wires upstream of the regulator. I ran this wire, though a 1 or 2 amp in-line fuse, straight to wire #32 of the 37 pin EMS harness. (either 32:right engine or 33:left engine will work) I put no filtering or anything in this circuit. As long as the alternator is on-line and the Dynon set to 6 pulses/rev for the same side engine it is wired to, it should work.

Good luck,

Doug,

I used one of the alternator wires through a 1 amp fuse also, Works great! I have a split master switch and found that both of the masters must be on! I suggested to the Dynon folks that they put this info in their troubleshooting tables, bu sounds like maybe they didn't. Bottom line is if the alternator is not producing power to the battery you will not get a tach indication.

Ron
