SERV:

Ron Schreck, Larry Bowen, and I went down to RUQ early this morning to pick
up Larry's plane from the paint shop ... beautiful ... Ron and Larry's planes
look great on the ramp together .... both in military paint schemes !!!

We then had a few make the trip down to Columbia Owens Field representing
SERV ... Bill Crothers, Tad Sargeant, and myself made the trip as a flight of
3. They had a very good turnout ... I did not count but I would guess 25 RVs
.. good food also.

After lunch the TEAM RV guys took us out for a "dog fight" ... what fun ...
we divided into two teams of 3 ... one team defended the airport and one team
attacked ... really fun !!!

Then flew a formation flight of 6 ... Kahuna and Speedy put us through the
ringer ... very hard workout but a great flight .... bumpy so we really
worked. Those guys are really good ... so it is awesome to have the chance to fly
with them ... great learning experience.

Hope all that went to Lake Norman had a good day .... someone post about the
event !!!

Len

I'm amazed you made it back to INT. In Danville we had thunder, snow, sleet,
rain and hail not to mention clear skies and low ceilings. What a day!

After we charged my dead battery at RUQ, I followed Ron to Lake Norman. The
pattern was full and there were planes waiting to back taxi on the runway.
We made a loose initial approach (Ron with smoke on), and when he turned
left to continue the pattern I climbed right for Twin Lakes. (The frequency
was crowded, but I did bid Ron farewell -- not sure he heard me.)

I survived landing on the more challenging rwy 27 at 8A7, so I guess I do
remember how to operate my own plane after 9 weeks without. I hadn't even
shutdown before the first admirer was at the hanger. After a couple minutes
there were a dozen people in my hanger welcoming the plane home. Pam and I
both got a kick out of that. What a great airport, that Twin Lakes.

I have several things to do on the plane before the week of SNF, but it sure
is great to have it back!

Congratulations, Larry!

Can't wait to photograph it myself - maybe we'll win the EAA 1083 photo
contest!

You're scaring me, Len. 3 on 3 dogfighting? Haven't we lost enough formation guys this year to midairs? Not to mention someone might try too hard to "win" and overstress an airframe. RV's don't fly too well with broken wings, especially those -8's. That's been adequately shown before.

I wasn't there, but this sounds like I can be glad I wasn't.

Be careful, friends. Y'all are not replaceable Smile

You're making me envious, Len. Should have been 4 on 3 dogfighting and
if you could have dragged the fight into my Phase I area we would have
trounced the suckers! Stormy, you are starting to sound like my mother

Columbia Owens Downtown Airport is KCUB.
Columbia Metro (the "big" airport) is KCAE.

Call me 803-238-2113 if any info or other help is needed.

Partly cloudy skies ... saw some small dark clouds in the distance ... never
saw rain nor any threat that I would not make it ... weird !!

Sounds much more manly than it actually was ... very well briefed .. the dos
and don'ts ... safety was always the first thought ... you really don't even
get near each other ... it is more circling ... looking for the enemy ... etc

Now I for one can appreciate how difficult that was... seems like w/o precise GPS circling fixes or "pop smoke, Len" we'd never find each other even if we were trying to be found Smile

Glad y'all are safe. I thought you were doing the actual tight climbing spiral dogfighting that my neighbor and I have done where we try to get on each other's six, and the G's really build fast. That would be dangerous in s-ships. BTW, it's surprisingly difficult to out-turn and out climb a Cessna 185 in an RV, but it can be done Wink

Larry,

I was on the ground watching you and Ron fly overhead. A bunch of us
were hoping you would land as well so we could admire yours and Ron's
planes side-by-side.
