Hi everyone.



Made my first flight today at KCPK just before lunch.  I just finished my 

BFR yesterday after not flying for almost two years.  I have several issues to resolve, but most of these should be minor.  I lifted off at 60KIAS and SLOWLY climbed out.  Top speed was 105 KIAS.  



The issues are prop is pitched too steep, so climb was poor.

Overheating of engine

Very heavy left wing.



If anybody has information on what was done to correct that heavy left wing I am all ears.



I'll work on the the cooling issues first as they are the simplest to fix and I hope to get some suggestions for the wing issues.  First thing I am going to look at is the aileron rigging. 



Thanks to all that gave me advise these past year or so.

Glenn,

I want to offer you my congratulations.  You built and flew your own plane!   I hope to join you soon..   Right now I'm rebuilding a wing I messed up when drilling the skins.  Argh!

Congrats to you for another Zenith in the air. !!!!!!!!!!!! 

As for your issues,  Is the prop adjustable?? is so a very easy fix.  What kind of engine are you using?  Heavy left wing is heard all the time. How was your corner weights when you did you weight and balance?

Congratulations Glenn!  You are off the ground and flying.  What a great accomplishment.  I have my Airworthiness Certificate now and I'm right behind you up here in Warrenton, VA.  The Mid-Atlantic area is Zenith country!  It was great meeting you at Suffolk.  I'm working on the Winchester Zenith Gathering and will announce it soon.

You need to put a trim tab on the right aileron angled down for a heavy left wing. This will take the pressure off the stick as it will be doing the same thing as you are doing manually to keep the left wing up. The trim tab always has to be pointing down and on an aileron. The air under the wing is undisturbed, even in a stall. If it is pointing up, it loses its effectiveness as the air over the top of the wing starts to burble, such as in a near stall.  Several have adjusted the ailerons thinking that will work, but all it does is put the stick off center in flight.

Ron,



The air over the aileron is undistrubed even in the stall due to the wing 

twist.

This link is to a video I made in my 601XL.  Notice at 22 seconds the wing 

root trailing edge is showing distrubance.

At 36 seconds,  I was indicating approx 30 KIAS and fully stalled.  The 

airflow over the ailerons is not distrubed.

The trim tab should work in either direction.

The only thing this will accomplish is to offset the neutral position  

of the stick to the left. The only way to correct a heavy left wing is  

to apply a counteracting force; either with stick force, a trim tab,  

ballast weight or by adjusting the rigging of the wings.

thanks for all the suggestions guys and gals



To answer some questions, I have an O-200 with a Warp drive 3 blade prop  It was set a 13.5 deg and tonight I backed it down to 12 deg.  I am still only getting 2,000 static on the run up tonight, however now I can't hold with brakes to do a run up at 1,700.



Weight and balance.  total weight is 818#.  the nose is the heaviest by far and I can't remember the two mains, but I do believe the left wheel was heaver by about 15#.  



I am planning on re visiting the aileron rigging before this weekend and try another test this weekend pending weather.  I also have a EAA meeting tomorrow so I'll get more info there also.



I'll submit more information as I fly more.

I am traveling from Nags Head back to Michigan and stayed in Chesapeake last night.  We might have been on the Chesapeake  Bay Bridge/Tunnel right about the time of your flight. It's almost like we were there with you
