Long time reader C rare contributor to discussions as I don't know anything.
I seem to remember reading a post about an inspector who said zinc chromatic is neither desirable nor required. I was wondering what the current concensis is on this subject.

Also C What is the correct order?
       1. Install engine
       2. Remove all clecos and  prime

     1. reverse above?

I am finishing up on the canopy now and wondering what the next step should be.

Thanks

Don, I too know nothing, but:
I am priming everything: I believe I will never regret having primed, but the chances are pretty good that, If I do not prime, I will regret it.
I wold expect that priming after the airplane is built may be a bit difficult...

I have noticed corrosion of different pieces of aluminum I kept around for a while (several months to a few years).
The material was kept indoors, and the atmosphere here is not particularly bad for this.
There was no contact with paper or cardboard nor any corrosive substances.
So, I figure better to do it than to regret not having done it.

Two observations on your note:
(1) Do not expect consensus on priming !! Smile
(2) You wonder what the next step should be: I suggest celebrating! You are almost there!

Happy building!
but do not archive.

Zinc chromate is one of many acceptable primers. There are places where some
sort of primer is required. Normally, on certificated aircraft, the FAA (and
thus the inspector) defer to whatever the manufacturer recommended. Sometimes
that's zinc chromate; sometimes something else.

One could argue that some of the newer primers are better (and hence, maybe
more desirable). But zinc chromate works: you can sometimes see aircraft from
WWII which still have the zinc chromate and still have the metal underneath
intact.

For whatever it's worth, that's what I'm using on my 601XL between mating
surfaces. Since this is a non-certrificated aircraft, I could use whatever I
wanted to, but zinc chromate has a good track record with me. I'm not saying
that all the other primers are bad; just that I've never had any problems
with this one.

ZC was the primer of choice when I started building and what I used everywhere metal meets metal in the tail and wings and firewall. I also used it in the rear part of the fuselage where inspection is harder.

I didn't use it quite as much in the forward part of the firewall. because inspection won't be as much of an issue.

Keep in mind that 6061-T6 has pretty good anti-corrosion properties all by itself and I noticed you are from Laredo. It's pretty dry there isn't it?

Hi, Don (and List),

Re: order of build, a suggestion: If you haven't closed up your plane
yet, consider electrical wiring. Running conduit (Van's nylon
corrugated conduit P/N DUCT NT5/8-50) through hard-to-reach places while
they're still accessible is MUCH easier than trying to fish conduit or
wire bundles after riveting. (Don't ask me how I know!!!) It's light,
flexible, and can be secured using plastic conduit straps from Lowe's
Electrical Aviation Department. Pull a light string through each
conduit run with a vacuum cleaner, and use it to pull the wires through
later.

Glad to hear that zc is still the way to go.
Next question is , Can I put the engine on and run it with the airplane in clecoes?

While you could probably do it 100 times and 99 of those times wouldn't be a problem you don't know when that one time it is going to cause a problem is going to happen.

I don't see much advantage to leaving the fuselage in clecoes and doing an engine run. Why not just rivet it? If you need to get to certain areas in the future it only takes a few minutes to drill out the rivets.

Not a problem here.....
I think i have used about a dozen cans of zinc and some other type that Zenith likes.... The Zinc is easier to use but not good for people to breath. Please use it in a well ventlated area and Do Not breath any. Read the MSDS on Zinc Chromate it is nothin to play with.. Just friendly advice.

Thanks
Gary

Thanx for the info guys. I have decided to continue using the zinc chromate and rivet the plane before putting the engine on.

I drilled my last holes today and will begin disassembly tomorrow for painting.
