A really expensive battery to me would be the A123 batteries that Bill Dube had thought about bringing to our market. The nice thing about a pair of 680's is that you can easily put them on a maintenance cycle where you replace one of them every one or two years during annual and you will probably never have a down aircraft due to a battery problem (leaving the master switch on doesn't count).
AGM's are essentially a deep cycle battery that can put out a lot of amps and also sit for months without losing any charge (again, that always on clock doesn't count). In my case the always on BATT bus is only drawing from one of the two batteries so even if the always on stuff like clock or trickle charge to EFIS internal batteries would happen to kill one of them, the remaining 680 should have enough to get me started. I also have the ability to isolate a battery in an alternator failure to supply nothing but my Lightspeed III.
Swapping one of these batteries every other annual, or even every annual, at $100USD isn't that major of an expense to me and I can always use the old batteries in the lawnmower, computer UPS, car, etc.
