Does anyone have a good solution for plugging the steering rod holes. I've
ordered the Yamaha parts, and they were way too large (8CR-2198F). I've also
tried the inner tube rubber with a slit, but the rods are threaded the whole
way, and it just chews the rubber up. Leaving them open is an option, but not a
good one. Can anyone tell me what they are using?

Is this for a 701 or an 801 ?
I thought both had the same size slots cut in the firewall.

Roger, go to matronics.com/photoshare and look for Charles F. Longs
solution, dated Dec. 23, 2007. I used his idea, which involves Jeep/Bronco
shifter boots. But I used scrap aluminum to make mounting plates and they
work well. I also used JB Weld to fill steering rod threads. If you'd
like, I have pictures of my installation.

 Hello, all

I don't know if this is applicable to the 701/801/750, but Larry McFarland has an elegant approach to the problem (he built a CH601-HDS):

Hi Roger:
It IS a firewall, and I just don't think the rubber boots that people are using fit the purpose, other than keeping out air and exhaust.
I made some nomex boots, and just in case they weren't airtight enough (which I think they were) I coated the inside with "tent sure" (a urethane paint made for sealing tents). This is a picture from my 601 which has been sold.........Fred Sanford N9701

True statement Fred. My concern was carbon monoxide poisoning. Fire is a
whole different story......Ralph Sharp N701SA

My boots are stuffed with ceramic wool. It takes 3000+ degrees to get it to burn. By that time you have lost the cowling, windscreen and any other flammable part between you and the motor.
