I recently started having a problem with the 912ul in my Kitfox IV. I noticed when reducing power in the pattern it would start running rough at about 4000 rpm, but then smooth out as I reduced power further.
On the ground I did a run up check, and found it ran normal from idle to 3000 rpm, but once reaching 3000 rpm it would just fall on it face, and run extremely rough. If I advance the throttle quickly it will make it through the rough range ( 3000 rpm to 4000 rpm) and run normally above 4000 rpm. This sounds to me most likely a carburetor problem. Have any of you run into this , and what was the fix?

My 912 does the same thing. Carb heat smooths it out at all the mid
ranges.

If carb heat smooth out the rough running, it means the mixture is a bit to
lean at mid range, hot air is less dense, making the mixture more rich.

One possible solution is to lower the circlips on the needle valve thereby raising them for slight richer mid range.Another approach is to change out the main jets to slightly larger which will richen the mixture at mid and upper range. Fly at 5000, ease out the enrichener watching rpm closely.  If you get a slight increase in rpm this is the preferred approach,  If you lose rpm you will be better served with the first solution.

Well, moving the needles up one notch seems to be the answer. It runs much smoother from idle up to full power now. At least on the ground. Tomorrow I will sync the carbs , put on the cowl, and go fly. After a few hours I will check the plugs for color, to see if I have gone too rich.
Thanks all for the advice.

Keith

Keith, Moving the needle clips "up" drops the needle farther into the jet and makes your midrange leaner, not richer.
