Check out this clip. Pilot loses all the oil from his engine while flying over some inhospitable terrain . He thought he was making a nice video to show his friends and family. Turns into one of the most exciting - and instructional - clips I've seen in a long time .

Question? Did he land gear up or gear down in that muddy field. We can have
a long debate on the issue of off field gear up landing on soft unprepared
terrain.
Me personally over in hospitable terrain, I'm opting for the silk letdown.
The kid did a good job getting her down. He did what we're supposed to
do...fly the airplane first.

He actually landed wheels-up, and I am sure that was the best way to do it since a normal landing would, I suspect, have done a lot of damage to the undercarriage mountings etc.

In passing we have bought the aircraft, and are now restoring it, and I can say that the damage is remarkably little, although there is a certain amount – even wheels-up - to one of the under carriage mountings in the wing, and, of course, bottom engine cowls; oil cooler; one aileron etc etc.

However it is one of the last three 50s that were made (actually for a film) after normal production had stopped.

So it is low total time, all mods done, and we will restore it to “as new” condition with long-range wing tanks; 400hp; MTV-9-260 prop etc.

That's what we did...... and buffed it out to 400hp and a nice new Termikas paint job while we were at it. (I think I'll point out that I was not in the a/c when it mounted the Ford)

I'm particularly attached to this aircraft as it was the first tail wheel I ever flew......... come to mention it; its the only tail dragger I've ever flown. I sure do miss it.

I had heard that the main issue was the dig in, flip over, and get
yourself crushed thing. But that's the 52. Is that also a worry with
the 50?

What a great clip! Sure has me taking an inventory of my own EP proficiency. Seems to me this is a great opportunity to learn from some hangar flying...so, here goes. (Disclaimer: none of this is meant as second guessing or arm chair quarterbacking, Andy did a great job and I'm thrilled he made it out OK. Throw darts at me if you want, but you'll be missing the point, which is for the rest of us to learn).

Question that maybe Richard or someone else has the answers to: oil temp never rose and the CHT's actually declined from the start of the problem to the engine failing. Having never been in that situation (thank God) I always thought that you would see an increase in CHTs at least?

RPM goes away due to no oil pressure (I've had this happen to me...twice now....both times, however, was near an airport. The first time was about 10 years ago and the main oil screen fell out...no safety wire, that time, either. The second was a cracked journal). We can't see the MAP gauge, but when was the last time you pulled prop back to the rear stop and flew around to see how the aircraft handled?....that's what Andy was forced into. He climbed over 1000 feet in less than 4 minutes, probably couldn't have done any better with the prop full coarse. When was the last time you did a simulated engine failure?

From engine failure to touch down is approx. 2:40. Assuming his altitude was ~3700 or greater, that's likely over 3000'. His climb paid off big time.

Gill shutters closed does reduce drag, believe it or not...but opening cockpit that early increases drag. Probably a net wash...but better to get that canopy open! It appears as though he did turn the mags off. The only critique I can come up with on this whole thing is the fuel shutoff isn't pulled and the master is left on. How much this matters on an engine out landing is hard to say...it didn't matter here.

It took Andy about 20 seconds to hit nearest on his GPS. How long would it take me? You? I dunno...I haven't thought about that in awhile.

Reading the report of work being done just prior to this gives me shivers. Same thing happened when I lost my oil pressure the first time. Even the best mechanics make mistakes, get distracted, and overlook stuff. Remember to always inspect the work done by your mechanic, even if you don't know which end of the wrench to hold, have him/her walk you through and show you what was done. If they get offended, you have the wrong mechanic.

What a great ending to a bummer of a situation. Sorry Andy lost a nice airplane. The good news is this is a GREAT learning tool for all of us...thanks for sharing!
