Guys,
I went to take my Instrument Check ride in my 601XL-B today. Everything was in order etc. except my Pilot Operating Handbook. I cleared taking the check ride with the examiner in my 601 over 6 months ago before I started training and 5 minutes into the oral portion today we had to stop because he didn’t think I had enough information in my POH for him to quiz me on my aircrafts systems. The fact that I built the thing isn’t proof enough that I know how everything works. Currently my POH has V speeds, all types of procedures, maintenance info, W&B, fuel burn etc info in it.
A call to the local FISDO said the same thing. I need a POH that contains enough information for the examiner to quiz me on all the systems in the aircraft. When I asked for an example of what exactly they wanted I was referred to “Everything that’s in a 172 POH” which I think is a bit overkill. In an effort save 100’s of hours making take off & landing performance graphs (yes they asked for these) and many other drawings does anyone have a good through POH for the 601XL using a Jabiru 3300 engine and preferably a Dynon EFIS? The one from Zenith is good but I can’t copy and paste and it’s the wrong engine with steam gauges. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
John

You are ' marked" by the 601 XL syndrome.... Your best bet is to take the exam in a 172 that has the "proper" POH. Just pass the exam and then fly your 601. They won't admit it but I am pretty sure thats the deal.

Hi John,

Have you considered looking for another examiner? Perhaps you can find one who doesn't really want to criticize your POH and just wants to check your IFR skills.

Another possibility is for you to use a C-172 POH to impress the guy with your performance chart reading skills and then go on to the actual flying in your XL.

Perhaps your FSDO can point you to other choices for the check ride.

Here is an idea: You might try to add an appendix or two to your POH. The Dynon User Manual and the Jabiru Maintenance Manual would do nicely. What is in a 172 manual varies quite a bit. I have a club owned Cessna 172M. It is a 1974 Skyhawk. The POH is about 3/16 of an inch thick but it is the official POH issued by the manufacturer.

John:

Get a hold of a Grumman AA5 POH.  It has next to nothing.  If I can get it scanned for you I'll send you a copy.  How the FAA let this POH go is beyond me.

here is what I have in mine.

Jabiru spec sheet
Trouble shooting Jabiru section.
Basic mainentance engine section
Weight and Balance
Electric diagram
fuel diagram
prpoeller specs
List of instruments and pages from opertion manuals (Dynons) compass, radio and trasnponder etc...
Speed limation diagram, spec sheet

you can cut and paste from the kit plans , the jabiru specs, .

The POH is to make it so that a person who has never been in one, can read it and know all the basics of the aircraft.

No doubt he "heard something" shortly before meeting with you, and was looking for an excuse not to fly in your airplane.

He just doesn't have the balls to be honest with you.

I'd find a different examiner...

Guys,
Thanks for all the posts and replies back. I’m going to take everyone’s suggestions and a few of the POH’s I got from folks and put it all together. FWIW I got this back from the FIDSO this afternoon:
“got in touch with the FAA in Oklahoma Mr. Dave Shadwick, manager of testing, and got some guidance for Examining an applicant in a Experimental Aircraft. And The answer is, the decision to test is left up to the examiner if He/She is comfortable to provide the Checkride as long as the PTS can be met.”
So I’m going to improve my POH but the solution seems to be I need to find a different examiner. Thanks again for all the help!

John:

Take a look at the Cessna POH, the format they use is common throughout the industry.
Each section is the SAME for each GA POH out there.
So if you follow that you should not go wrong.
AND if the examiner questions your layout just drop a Cessna POH on the desk.
The idea of getting a different examiner is a good one... But, they do have a common database where the forms are maintained.  Your new one should have done their homework in reading it.  SOooooo you will still have to answer the same questions just the new one might be more realistic.

BEST OF LUCK.

Another thought: Without a POH to refer to, the examiner has no way to
verify the answers to his questions, and so no way to be sure his butt is
covered should you have an accident later on.
