I still have the original band brakes and think you all need all this hydraulic stuff to stop the extra weight of your braking system! I do admit that at high speed the bands do fade but a good pilot doesn’t need to worry about that, we just land on the numbers and let it roll out and use the brakes to turn. The bands will hold you at full power when cold but won’t stop you at 70mph, but with over 1,200 hours on the plane the only thing I really want to change is how the cable hooks to the band. Maybe a lever that hooks to the band and the cable hooks to the lever…. I’m working on it…about 2 years now but I’ll figure out something. The entire band braking system weighs about 4lbs total, what does the fluid squirting system weigh? Jerry

I'm with Jerry, I have the band brakes and they are working pretty good. Plane weights 482 lbs.

In my experience Matco was really great to work with.� My XP kit was purchased in 1996 with a hydraulic Matco kit.� When testing after sign off in 2007 and after a couple of trips down the runway, the brakes literally fell apart.� Pads were disintegrated and the disks were ruined.

I called the Matco owner, George.� He explained to me that before he purchased the company materials used were not well sourced and what ever was on the shelf was used and delivered to customers.� Since that time he tests materials used and he has a much better product.

Although he was not obligated, he gave me a very good price on upgraded calipers, disks and pads.� They work great and they are wearing quite well with minimal wear on the pads.�

My big problem was getting the air out of the system.� In the standard configuration with the XP, the master cylinders are inverted so you end up trying to push bubbles down hill.� I had to get on my belly under the panel and disconnect the master cylinders, invert them and then pressure fill the fluid through the system.� It was a job and even then it was not easy.

I recommend Matco.
