Hi Harry,
I think running a P-Mag or one LSE in addition to one Magneto would be a conservative solution. However, I would feel pretty darn safe behind DUAL LSE's or P-Mags, as long as they are powered individually... Electronics have been around for a while, and they can be made nearly fail safe. Magneto's are certainly not fail safe either. Use whatever lets you sleep at night

FWIW - I learned something by reading the EmagAir manual. The Pmag, with the built-in alternator, self-powers at all times unless the RPM of the engine falls below the threshold where it can do so. Thus, instead of being concerned about a continuous 1A drain from the power source (battery in the case of an alternator out condition), as long as you are in cruise condition the mags are not a factor. I agree with the 'individually powered' statement, and am adding a small 7AH battery to my system, will power one mag from the main battery and the other from the backup. (see AEC diagrams http://www.aeroelectric.com/PPS/Adobe_Architecture_Pdfs/Z10-8A1.pdf http://www.aeroelectric.com/PPS/Adobe_Architecture_Pdfs/Z10-8A2.pdf ) Unfortunately in my case I can't fit a backup alternator/dynamo so will have two batteries and a single alternator.[quote]---

Phil,
You can't add the little SD-8 alternator (by B&C) on your vacuum pad? I think that little alternator is just perfect either as a back up. But then, the SD-8 is actully all that I am planning on using on my future airplane (which will not have much electric drain either)... But then, I also plan on a small 5-7AH (Ignition only!) battery just in case. That should do the trick and is light weight too.

Tried, it won't fit - bumps engine mount. I have an O320 narrow deck (conical mount). It will fit on the O360 wide deck for certain as I talked to several people that have that config and are running the SD8> You can't add the little SD-8 alternator (by B&C) on your vacuum pad? Bummer... but then a small dedicated backup battery will do the trick to provide enough ignition energy to find a suitable landing spot in case of a total electrical failure (?). Unless things go really wrong, remember that you still have the main battery too for that same purpose

I agree with you about electronics but my understanding is that most if not all of the P-Mag/E-Mag early teething problems were actually mechanical in nature. I may be wrong.

As described to me there was a magnet or something held with epoxy that when the unit became hot moved, shifted or in some way changed the function of the unit to then fire something like 180 degrees out of phase.
This is how it was described to me.

I don't remember anymore what kind of problems they had back then, but I think they took care of whatever it was by now... There won't be any progress in life unless there are risk takers who'd go the extra mile to come up with something new

Good Morning:For what it's worth: I fly with dual E-Mag Electronic Ignition units on my Mattituck TMX IO-360 equipped RV-7A. I have 222 hours on the engine since new and have never flown with anything other than the E-Mags; so I have no basis for comparison with any other system. I have never had even the hint of a problem and have no complaints. They're also easy to time. I do a lot of x/c flying and find that, leaned to 50 degrees lean of peak, fuel burn at 2300 rpm is about 7.5 gph.
Before first flight on my a/c back in Aug 09 there was a recall of the units due to a mechanical issue - I don't recall specifics but it had something to do with a faulty set screw arrangement. E-Mag modified/ fixed the units at no cost and I'm not aware of any issues with the modified units.
I fly with aviation spark plugs and think I'd be a little nervous flying with auto plugs. Are automotive plugs able to tolerate the increased ignition temps of P Mags / E Mags?
