Martin,
I checked the carb when I received it and found it came with a 250 in lieu of a 255 main jet. It would not turn up for the previous owner and I believe it was due to being too lean. I went up in size slowly watching EGT and CHT's. I ordered a 260 main jet from Pete and installed it. I also ordered a 290 needle jet and bored it to 295.
I have changed jets so many times I don't even pull the carb off the engine any more. i think it is about as close to being right as I can get it.

Hi Bobby,

There are a few more mods that can be made, but not necessary maybe in your application.
These include drilling out the idle air bleed (which may entail upping the idle jet to #45) drilling out the main airbleed and the emulsion tube holes and even the jet in the float bowl that feeds the 'choke' circuit.  Also placing a small washer under the clip on the needle will richen the mixture in cruise.

But I really think that the problems are poor mixture distribution due to the manifold design, sometimes helped by angling the carb.

Have you checked the Needle & seat in the carb ?
The early engines used the same as the 4 cyl but has since been upgraded to a larger size to allow more fuel flow.
