I just received a touching and heartfelt email from Mark Phillips that I 

wanted to share with list members that Mark didn't feel were as special.

    It's an unfortunate human shortcoming that the

    interpretation of spirit and intent for the

    written (and often the spoken) word can be so

    far off the mark.



    Another decidedly human characteristic is a

    willingness to be insulted . . . whether or not the

    speaker/writer is intending to be hurtful.



    Many of you will recall some years ago that a participant

    here  on the list suggested that I was "too easily

    insulted" or some such. I had to remind him that

    he did not have my permission to be insulting.



    His words were either informative or constructively

    persuasive whereupon they were worthy of everyone's

    attention . . . or they were intended to bring

    discomfort in which case they could simply be discounted

    or ignored. In other words, it is up to the listener/

    reader to decide how much intellectual/emotional

    capital is to be expended on the exposition of others.



    In retrospect, it was easy to see how the series

    of replies morphed from useful exchanges of information

    into sand and tomato throwing contests between

    individuals who made choices to be insulted. I am

    certain that this outcome was an unhappy surprise

    for Ferg.



    If Mark is still tracking the List, I would encourage

    him to take command of his capital accounts. Becoming

    a participant in hurtful exchanges (for correctly or

    incorrectly perceived reasons) is a tax on the

    soul . . . a tax that any of us in a state of

    individual and communal liberty can choose not to pay.



    We have useful and pleasurable business to conduct

    here on the List that is demanding of our time,

    talents and resources. Let us strive to make it

    an investment with a good return . . . as opposed

    to a tax.



    The key is simple . . . we can choose not to allow

    anyone to insult us. By so doing we avoid imposing

    any sort of political correctness upon List

    participants . . . which stultifies intelligent

    conversation.
