In order to "flash the field" you momentarily connect the field terminal on the generator to the positive lead on the battery. (Assuming negative ground that is.) This causes full battery voltage to flow through the field. The result is that the pole-pieces in the field take on a low-level permanent magnetism. This allows the generator to be self-exciting.

Blitz describes "self-exciting" in a very different way....

I know Pappy. Those of us who live on this side of the country are affected by our proximity to the left coast. I am sure that if I move I will regain some of my mental stability. Pray for me.
BTW, I have some good news. Remember my 12-year-old GIB who accompanied me to the Red Star fly-in about 12 years ago? Well, he has fulfilled his goal to graduate from the United States Naval Academy and begins pilot training in August. He his hoping to follow in his grandfather's, uncle's, and great uncle's footsteps and smash airplanes into the back of boats.

Brian,
I removed and added equipment to my CJ removing 99% of the Chinese wiring, instruments, and avionics. Installed the Dynon SV system and lost 171lbs. J
2 10” panels in the front, 1 10” panel in the back, dual ADHARS, SV transponder, backup GPS, and 2- axis auto pilot.

Ah, it has been a long time since I have worked on the electrical system of a CJ6A. I am going to have to guess here because my copy of the schematic is not at all clear. I cannot clearly read the labels on the connectors so I am going to make some general comments and suggestions as to how to identify the field terminal on the generator.
The three wires on the generator are earth (ground), the armature (output), and the field. You will find that the field lead is routed to the generator switch on the panel. (Turning off the generator switch disconnects the field winding from the regulator which is how the generator is forced to shut down.) The ground and armature wires will be of larger gauge. The field wire will be much smaller. My guess is that E is 'earth' or ground.
There are two ways I can think of to identify the field:
- Disconnect the generator connector and measure the resistance between the terminals using an ohm meter that can measure less than one ohm. The Field will be the terminal that has a greater resistance than the other two. This resistance will still be low, probably on the order of one or two ohms but you should be able to measure the difference clearly.
- Disconnect the wires from the generator. The field wire will be the one that has continuity to one of the terminals on the generator switch on the panel.
You can flash the field with the regulator still connected to the generator. If the generator switch is turned off then the field is effectively disconnected from the regulator so there will be no possible problem with the regulator.
Good luck and consider converting from the generator to an alternator. It would let you pull out the heavy generator and replace it with a smaller and lighter alternator. Also you can remove the regulator and filter from the firewall. These changes should be good for at least 20lb removed from the airplane.
FWIW, when I removed the Chinese wiring harness from my project I tossed it all in a box and weighed it. It weighed in at 90lb! That was just the wiring harness itself. I would bet that a good rewiring job using modern instruments and avionics, will save over 200lb.

I DO remember!!! MUST be genetics man!! I have several ex Navy type who fly my wing down here in God's country. Can't land an airplane worth a pop. I think they keep seeing lines across the runway or something! I see more smoke off the tires than a 747!
My "nephew" Billy, did the same. At 10 he wrote a letter to Congress woman Nancy Johnson to "save him a seat at the AirForce Academy". Well I helped him get private before he finished high school. He went right to the academy, graduated #4, went to fly F-15C, and now is at the Pentagon. That feels like an instant ago.

Yeah, well, I had something to do with it. I never had a problem to get him into the airplane -- RV4, CJ, or Yak -- if I was going out to yank-'n-bank. The kid loves G's, the more the better. It was usually me calling for "knock it off" as his entry pull for just about everything was 6 G's. No half-measures for him.
Class of '75 eh? Well Seth is Class of '11. I s'pose you guys can do the ring-knocker thing.

Keep us updated on where your nephew goes to flight training. I am a flight instructor in Kingsville, TX teaching advanced jet. I would be fun to have another Red Star guy down here.
