If you happen to know at which speed one gets the highest rate of
climb (Vy) with an RV-6 with a 160 HP Lycoming O-320 and with a
fixed-pitch propeller at maximum take-off weight (MTOW) please let me
know. If you know where I can find this information I would like to
hear that. (I have checked the Vans Website but have not found this
information.)
Thanks.

Hi George,
|
You can use the standard formula related to stall speed (I've forgotten
what it is, but something like 1.3 or 1.4 times stall speed) & it will
be close. However, Van himself wrote an article a number of years ago
about that very issue, & discussed the reasons that you can increase the
speed quite a lot above that calculated speed without noticeably
affecting rate of climb. If memory serves, it's related to the
relatively low aspect ratio wing's induced drag going up rapidly at the
low speeds involved at 1.3 or 1.4 * stall.
I went to Van's page & searched for 'best climb speed' & got a lot of
hits; here's one of the generic articles I found:
article Van wrote. I'm pretty sure that his recommended best climb speed
number was similar to the link above: in the neighborhood of 110-120
statute mph.
