I am having a problem trying to seat the lower left 7/16 wing attach bolt on the left wing. I had no problem with the similar bolt on the right wing. This is the bolt that's behind the landing gear structure, the most difficult to get a wrench on its nut.
I oiled the bolt, and can wrench it to within about 1/4 inch from the main spar, but can not wrench any more. I tried wiggling the wing and loosened the 1/4 bolt next to it, it's the only other bolt installed. But, no luck. it just won't turn. I hate to put a long pipe on the the 1/2 drive ratchet the I am using for fear of distorting the bolt head.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Are you saying it's the bolt head that's 1/4" from the main spar? I believe
I got a flat screwdriver or some other object -- maybe a bucking bar, I
forget -- and tapped it with a rubber mallet or a rivet gun set on very low
pressure.

Yes the bolt head is 1/4" from the main spar. I tried tapping it in further with a rivet gun, but no luck. I am wondering while the threaded part of the bolt goes through the hole in the steel plate of the gear attachment, can the shank, which is a little greater in diameter than the threads, be to big to go through the hole? As I said, the bolt on the other wing worked OK. I'll keep trying.

Did you happen to check whether the close tolerance bolts would fit the individual components before integrating them? I would probably remove the wing and try if not.
Also, have you been using a standard bolt (maybe with a "bullet shaped end") to align all the holes. I used 4 such bolts of each of the two sizes on a wing.

For even non-close-tolerance bolts on my -7A during assembly (a process still going on ☺ ), the steel gear weldments’ holes were too small for the bolts. I had to remove the weldments and slightly ream the holes (and then checked them with the close-tolerance bolts) and reinstall them. I suspect you have the same issue here.
Note that I said ream the *weldment* holes, NOT the spar (before I get a bunch of emails saying “Van’s says don’t ream the spar!”).

I am using standard bolts for alligning. Remove the wing, hmm, how can I get the that bolt out that's already through the spar and up to the gear plate?
Thanks - Herb

Is that the first and only bolt you have semi-in for that wing so far? If so perhaps installing a couple of the other bolts will better align things such that original bolt will slide through. I used a couple of hardware store bolts with the threads ground off to align things and left those in while installing the other close tolerance bolts. By that point it was fairly easy to pull out the make-shift pins and slide in the final close tolerance bolts. Maybe that first bolt is pinched a bit if it's the only one in so far and perhaps installing the other bolts will bring things into better alignment and allow it to slide the rest of the way through. Don't forget to start threading the nut as soon as you have one or two treads through for those lower bolts. Otherwise If you push them all the way through there won't be enough clearance to install the nuts. Good luck!

Not likely but: make sure your main gear leg mounts are part number WD-721 (RV7A) and not part number WD-921 (RV9A). The parts have been mixed up at Van's in the past, especially early on in shipments.
The RV7A gear mounts have three large holes and one much smaller hole in the top, while the RV9A mounts have just 3 large holes in the top. They are very close in specifications and look interchangeable; but, are not.

I installed the remaining wing bolts, and it did loosen up the tight bolt enough to get it seated. Thanks Dan, and the rest of the group for the help.

Subject: Re: Installing wing bolts on RV-7A
Is that the first and only bolt you have semi-in for that wing so far? Good luck!

Did you happen to check whether the close tolerance bolts would fit the individual components before integrating them?I would probably remove the wing and try if not.
Also, have you been using a standard bolt (maybe with a "bullet shaped end") to align all the holes. I used 4 such bolts of each of the two sizes on a wing.

As I said, the bolt on the other wing worked OK. I'll keep trying.

#yiv139999608 body {word-wrap:break-word;background-color:#ffffff;} Are you saying it's the bolt head that's 1/4" from the main spar? I believe I got a flat screwdriver or some other object -- maybe a bucking bar, I forget -- and tapped it with a rubber mallet or a rivet gun set on very low pressure.

Dan - I didn't hear about liquid nitrogen, however, someone suggested to soak them using dry ice from he local super market. Vans recommended to put the easier, upper bolts in first to establish the wing hole positions. Were I to do it again, I would start with upper bolts first.

Hi Herb: Good morning - glad you got that bolt seated and are on your way. Have a great first flight and fly safe.
Maybe I missed it in all the discussion but I don't recall seeing any mention of a procedure we used when my mentor and I installed the wings on my RV-7A in July 09 - i.e., shrinking the bolts with liquid nitrogen. I bought a container (they don't call it "can" but I can't recall the correct word at the moment - it looks a little like an old fashioned milk can) from a local industrial gas supply house and cold soaked the bolts for several minutes before installing them - it shrinks them down enough to make a difference - a couple thousands of an inch I suppose.
