I am currently working on buying a Yak-52, but if that doesn't work out I need a plan B. Since my original desire was to build or rebuild an aircraft this fits the bill. I came across this ad on Barnstormers.

http://www.barnstormers.com/ad_detail.php?ID=492247

I do not know much about this airplane, can anyone fill me in? What about the ad itself? The price he is selling it for seems very good. The engine and prop alone seem worth it. What is the process of getting something like this from France to the US?

Thanks

I don't know anything about the aircraft specifically. We do import and export so if you need that capability please contact me off line.

Cheers

Sergei Prolagayev , a well known Russian aerobatic champ, used to borrow one of these I-3's from a friend in the states to compete in IAC advanced category aerobatic competition. It is virtually an all metal version of a Sukhoi 29. It is much more capable aerobatically than a Yak 52. This also means neutral stability in pitch and a symmetrical wing . It has a better cowl design for CHT cooling. It has had great reviews except for numbers available to buy. But if you are doing all the restoring and can maintain it I bet the final product will be

I owned an I-3 for a summer. Took it in on partial trade for a CJ that I restored back before I got into this business. I liked the plane, for what it was designed for - hard core acro. It is a very capable aerobatic plane as previously pointed out. It is typical Russian, i.e. very utilitarian, and lacks the fit and finish of western counterparts. The plane is what I would define as "medium difficulty" to land as a tail dragger. Not a PT-22, but not a Decathalon, either.

400HP motor is nice, but also more maintenance intensive and lower TBO.

This is a good local aerobatic plane with plenty of opportunity to grow into the advanced category with, but it is a bit on the ugly side, support is virtually nonexistent for the the airframe, and cross country's are a painful venture as maintaining straight and level flight effortlessly was one of the designer's last concerns. If you want to pull hard and do that macho outside stuff, this plane is a cheap way to get that. If you are looking for something to do formation, acro, and a bit of cross country in, the Yak and CJ are both far better options, in my opinion.

Happy Flying,

Barry

It's wonderfully nice to have the symmetrical wing. If you delight in sustained inverted flight and effortless rolls, enjoy the challenge of outside maneuvers and a steady diet of gyroscopic figures, you will enjoy the I-3 enough to forget the negatives.
If your aerobatic desires are limited to "warbird aerobatics", you would appreciate the traits of the CJ or Yak 52 more.
