For those interested here is a picture of the rocker box with the cover off.(as if you are doing a head bolt check) If you see the discolored area around the exhaust valve on the right,you might want to look further into the situation.

Discoloring around the exhauxt valve stem is usually associated with heat come thru the valve guide and seal. I spent many years as owner operator of an automotive machine shop as well as building a multitude of various types of racing engines. I've ran across this many times
