Wanted to share a problem I am having integrating my MGL Voyager with my 100hp Corvair engine. A couple of months ago I posted a message to the effect that I thought I was having carb problems when I would firewall the throttle. After spending considerable time troubleshooting the problem of the engine missing above 2400rpm, I discovered that if we removed the wire connecting the open points ignition coil to the RDAC rpm counter wire connection, the problem went away. The engine runs fine connected to the electronic ignition system with its ignition coil connected to the RDAC. Please note that the 2 ignition systems are each equipped with their separate diode and joined to a common wire through a fuse to the RDAC. MGL has been very cooperative and concerned about what is happening but they are unable to explain why the engine is disrupted on the open points system. I am sure that they deal with aviation engines but have little experience with our automotive Corvair engine. As an alternative, at their suggestion, we have connected the RDAC to the alternator output wiring. We are getting an rpm output and we have been adjusting the pulses, but the readings are unreliable and fluctuate. Maybe somewhere out there someone has experience with this situation and can explain what is happening. Also, if someone is intending to hook their Corvair engine up to MGL or Dynon, they need to be aware of the potential problem that we have been experiencing. We flew our plane for the first time to Oshkosh last year and thought that we were experiencing carb ice. We now believe that we were experiencing carb ice, but we were also having RDAC/ignition problem causing the engine to run rough.
