Hello group,

I am in the final documentation phase of my LANCAIR 360 project and starting
to copy my handmade - electrical - drawings to the computer. Therefore I am
looking for a good tool and a free of charge CAD program probably compatible
with ACAD.

Any hints recommendations are highly appreciated,

I use Visual Cad, and that's not free, but you can use a full featured copy of it for 30 days without paying, if that's all you need. www.tritools.com/v6_demo.htm It does read some ACAD files, and they try to keep up with all the ACAD versions, but even Autocad can't read all of it's own versions.

However, I have also been looking at Draftsight and find that it is a very good, free program. www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/download-draftsight/

It is very versatile, and I've found it an excellent program for my use, and, even though I haven't tried, it can read read and write ACAD (.dwg) files

When I go to the Draftsight website you provide below, I see the headline:
DraftSight: Professional-grade, free* CAD software
Can you please tell me what the asterisk after "free" means? A lot of "free" programs usually mean 30 day free trial, free if you sign up for something else, etc. I hesitate to sign up for this program until I get a better understanding of what Dassault System's meaning of "free" is.

Totally free...if you are satisfied with using only the 2D version, and are using it as an individual. If you want to use it in your business, or the 3D version, you pay for it then.

I've had it installed for over a year, and I'm still using it...it does ask you to "reactivate" it on occasion, but is just a single click to do so, no additional information needed, and that doesn't interfere with any work you are doing. I assume it is just to be sure that you are still an individual user. Besides having installed it on this desktop computer, I also have it on my Windows 7 tablet computer, and have been using it there for a couple of months.

Almost forgot . . .

There's also a selection of page-per-system wirebook drawings
you can download at:

If you're of the page=per=system persuasion, these drawings may
well reduce your wiring documentation task by more than half. Many
of the symbols are already in place for cut-n-paste. The view-per-page
organization is already set up to let you document the whole project
on one drawing while being able to print any combination of pages for
the final document.

Thanks, Harley, I appreciate the info below. I was afraid Dassault was gonna hit me up to buy a Mirage OBAM kit. Smile

I never use 3D programs as my professional world revolves around electrical/field/SW simulation, but I know mechanicals are using programs like Pro-E and SolidWorks to do it. If we want to do simulation, do you or anyone else here know of a really good and cheap (free) 3D program? If not, how much does DraftSight 3D cost?
I believe we had a CAD discussion about two months ago, but we didn't discuss CAD simulation, or did we?

The 3D version of Draftsight is Solidworks...same company...they also offer a number of other services and programs that they charge for...but Draftsight is free.

However, I have also been looking at Draftsight and find that it is a very good, free program. www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/download-draftsight/

It is very versatile, and I've found it an excellent program for my use, and, even though I haven't tried, it can read read and write ACAD (.dwg) files

Bob,

nanoCAD sounds like a pretty good product, but I went to their website and noticed it's out of the Russian Federation. I'm not the kind of guy that demeans foreign products unless I have a very good reason, which also applies to domestic products. I'm leery about anything that comes out of Russia and China now, because their governments do not hold anyone's feet to the fire when it comes to shenanigans. I know that much malware comes out of these two countries, and there's not much we can do about it. It's entirely possible that nanoCAD might get compromised by hackers and deliver us a product we don't like. After the demise of the USSR, there were many talented programmers left behind without jobs. Many of them migrated out to Israel and Western countries to find good paying jobs, but many of them stayed behind to work real jobs and some became hackers. This is why I would rather go with DraftSight and not nanoCAD. nanoCAD is comprised of a bunch of developers, and not telling what anyone of them will do.
If this sounds xenophobic, rest assured it's not, because I don't think Dassault is loaded up with hackers. I just don't trust loose organizations from Russia, China, Iran and other countries whose governments don't have the legal framework to take someone to jail or court if a foreigner gets attacked in cyberspace. Do you have such feelings about nanoCAD, or do you trust them wholeheartedly?

Hi Hernador,For 3-D CAD I bought Cheetah3D for $99US about 3 weeks ago. It is a Mac only application, and I use it on a 27-inch iMac with OS X "Mountain Lion". Like most 3-D software it has a steep learning curve; you have to know a lot of things to do even simple renderings. It is extremely powerful and can do animations and linked motions of parts.
BRL CAD is another 3-D application that can be used on Mac, Windows, Unix, Linux, and others. Its price (free) is right, but unless you like using a Unix-like interface it will be a frustrating experience. Its learning curve is even steeper than Cheetah3D's.

Totally free...if you are satisfied with using only the 2D version, and are using it as an individual. If you want to use it in your business, or the 3D version, you pay for it then.

I've had it installed for over a year, and I'm still using it...it does ask you to "reactivate" it on occasion, but is just a single click to do so, no additional information needed, and that doesn't interfere with any work you are doing. I assume it is just to be sure that you are still an individual user. Besides having installed it on this desktop computer, I also have it on my Windows 7 tablet computer, and have been using it there for a couple of months.

DraftSight is backed by a world class company - and its free - and its totally AutoCAD compatible - at least for your day to day 2D drafting stuff
The 3D stuff done by Dassault is SolidWork ... or Catia ... both are high end stuff ..Catia more so - I would trust the French over the Russians any day Smile ... no offence to anyone Russians !!
I am sure the Nano stuff may be perfectly ok ... of Bob is using it ... Remember that DS is a relatively new offering from Dassault ... I suppose they like to hook you early ... give you 2D for free ... then you migrate to SW ... or the very big league ... Catia ...

Trying to get the cheapest (or free) software is unlikely to save anything. The last time I downloaded a free cad program, it came with free viruses, crapware and spam that took me days to eliminate. I decided I could do without it.

Ebay has full boxes of recent versions of TurboCAD or DesignCAD with manuals and disks and support and users forums AND FREE SHIPPING for $10. Grab one.

I used to claim DesignCAD was close to the best due simply to the customer service. They were like the Maytag repairman...waiting for someone to call.

I used to work at a company with a BIG cad program (Cadra) that wouldn't convert Autocad or do much of anything else. I was always converting ACad files and doing special jobs using DesignCAD. Furthermore tiny little DesignCAD had a button marked 3D...and that big CAD program could only dream about having 3D capability.

TurboCAD is similar and better in some areas. Some users do some things in DesignCAD and other things in TurboCAD on the same drawing. You can (easily!) build models in Ms-Excel and import them into a CAD program, and them send them to your paint program (like PaintShop Pro).

You have me intrigued now ... How do you design models in MsExcel unless you mean entering XYZ co-ordinates ... simple geometries for turning parts etc....

I think if you try Dassault and its free 2D offering you will be pleasantly surprised ... and it is really free ... not like the normal free stuff .. Wink ...

Although not compatible with AutoCad, ExpressSCH (http://www.expresspcb.com) is much easier to learn than full featured CAD programs. And it is completely free with no annual registration renewal.
Someone might have an aviation component library for use with ExpressSCH.

Although it is probably not a useful subject for the AeroElectric, here is a short tale of making Lame' curves for CAD programs, plus a link to my free Excel SuperEllipse Curve Generator for use by artists, engineers and designers.

The basic technique is to program Excel to generate XY or XYZ numbers, then exporting them into a CAD program. Sometimes it is necessary to edit the numbers via MS Notepad (often just rename the extension). Most cad programs can accept coordinates as one of their inputs. You can also use a BASIC program or such to use the geometric equations to generate a list of numbers. It sound harder than it is, but it is a wonderfully useful technique.

One great aeronautical use is to copy the NACA airfoil coordinates at:

The XY numbers paste right into CAD programs and draw airfoils. Cool!

I would advise caution with the ExpressPCB software. It works OK and it's relatively simple to learn, but it's very much a one-trick pony. It's intended for electronics schematic design and circuit board layout; it has zero CAD functionality in the mechanical engineering sense.
ExpressPCB is a circuit board manufacturer. Their free software is intended to generate orders for that business. It uses a proprietary file format only and will not export to or import from any other formats; there's no way to get your design out of the software except as a printed drawing, a bitmap image or an overpriced circuit board order. Component libraries are limited and the software has no provision for user-created parts/libraries.
I used ExpressPCB briefly before I realized all of this and had to recreate several projects from scratch.  I now use DipTrace and love it. For non-profit use with 2-layer boards and <=500 pins, it's free. For-profit licenses start at $75.  The part libraries are massive, you can request that new parts be added, and component/pattern design software is included in the package to make your own parts/libraries. They have an active online forum and tech support is very responsive. DipTrace exports industry-standard Gerber 274X and Excellon NC Drill files for manufacturing.
Eagle is another very popular schematic and PCB layout package with essentially identical capabilities and similar licensing schemes to DipTrace. Eagle is in very wide use, but I found its learning curve to be a bit steep for my feeble brain.
