My latest Red Star aircraft is on it's way from Vancouver BC by way of a less than friendly customs. Customs was asking for 30% duty but finally relented and let my friend and aircraft continue south. This particular CJ is a 1996 model.

I would like to know what mod was done to replace the nosewheel and why?

This aircraft has an intake scoop on the right cowl side, I have never seen this. What is it for?

Lastly, it has all the Chinese radios and from what my friend told me, the ADF is digital. Anyone ever see one of those? Is the comm radio usable?

I am very curious to see this aircraft with my own eyes, it sounds like a nice plane.

Wow sounds like some changes have been made to the basic model. I thought
about going out and seeing what a 1996 looks like, but I didn't think they
would have made any changes.

I have been curious about the new intake on the cowling for some time. I suspect it is associated with a cabin heat system. Please report what you find and upload some pictures if able.

I have a 1976 CJ that also has an intake vent on the right side of the
engine lower cowling. It also has a tube running between the fire walls on
the lower right side. With a hole in both fire walls. I also would like to
know what these are for. I have owned 6 CJ's and none of the first 5 had
this on them.

I guessed the same, cabin heat. I believe my last CJ had it also, Keith McKinley now flies it, maybe he has an answer. It also had the holes in the bulkheads. I will take pictures when able.

How about improved cooling for the air compressor?

I have never been able to figure it out Phil. There are tube flanges on both sides of the bulkhead. I assumed one was for a heating system and the other maybe just fresh air off that scoop you mention. I've since added an additional blast tube in the gills and use the flanges you describe to run a scat tube to the rear cockpit. The positive pressure helps keep smoke entering the cockpit from my smoke system to a minimum.

Thanks Keith,

I was able to visit my CJ in CA and found I have scoops on both sides of my cowl. Both have felt seals on the inside which sealed the heat muff to the cowl. From the firewall back, there is around 2 1/2" metal insulated tubing to a heat valve on each side of the cockpit. The right side feeds the front heat and defrost, the left side tube feeds the rear cockpit.

I do not have the heat muffs and the firewall inlets are sealed.

Very interesting.
I have been working on my cabin heat install for the last couple weeks. It is a DIY system. Sonic Headers made my heat muff: http://sonicheaders.com/
This picture was taken when I put the heat muff on no. 8 which is the cylinder I told Sonic Headers to build my heat muff for. They built it for no. 4 instead, so the picture does not represent its final installation. It turns out that having the heat muff on no. 4 is a better location than on no. 8.
I just received some SCAT duct from Aircraft Spruce and should finish my installation this weekend. I will take more pictures this weekend.

Thanks for sharing

Flying about in the uk at this time of year its cold, i'm interested to fit a system to warm both cockpits.

I noticed Doug S lists a heater conversion, anyone fitted one of these kits?

Harv,

Being a swamp dweller, there isn't much need for one here, but you might look into electric heaters. I've seen "Yankee" CJs with small electric quarts heater mounted that run off 24v who's pilot swore were more than adequate. The installations were small, neat, and most important, simple.
