Hi all,

my friends built a new panel for me. Since most work is creating the negative form, we thought about selling it for a reasonable price to anyone who is interested - or especially has not reached this build status. The front panel can be customized to individual needs.

Attached you find the first pictures of it. It will be available after Chistmas.

On that occasion: merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you!

Best wishes
Roland

Update: Asking Price is 750 EUR (650 GBP) plus VAT and shipping. A front Aluminium Panel is included as well - all ready to install, but without cutouts for instruments etc.. Since the panel is constructed for my Trigear, I cannot say yet, if it is in the way for the Monowheel flap handle, but will measure that on occasion.

The Panel can be produced within a few days by Spreuwenberg Techniek in Venlo in the Netherlands. He can do the cutouts as well if desired.

I will post some more photos in due course. What you see on the photos now is the negative form for the actual panel.

Work at the Panel/negative form is still in progress by Spreuwenberg Tekniek in Venlo/The Netherlands, who is building it for my Trigear.

For those who asked me: I've measured and compared the distances from the Firewall and fuselage bottom between the old and the new panel and although there is more leg room etc. with the new Panel, it is probably necessary to cut out a Little space for the gear/flap lever of the Monowheel. Cutouts in the Aluminium front plate can be made by Spreuwenberg Tekniek as well, same applies for spraying etc. if desired.

More photos coming soon....

My new Dynon D 60 has arrived on time for chistmas Smile

Happy new year to you all!

Hi Bob,

I'm also looking forward to see it completed. The CAD-drawings for the instrument cutouts from the Aluminium panel are also ready in the meantime. Of course I took the chance to make a whole new setup of the instruments following my own logic. An additional advantage for me (I'm 1,82 meters tall) is the added legroom. As color I'll choose a dark gray.

I have no idea to be honest, why the photos appear so huge (I find it best visible to reduce it to 40%).

Regards
Roland

Just a note for UK owners. I was quite interested in fitting a full width panel although this one works out quite expensive so I asked my inspector for his opinion and he said email Andy draper, which I did and his response was that it is a mod, which would need to be applied for and he would need to see crash test data and such, so in conclusion too much trouble and too expensive.

Hi Frank,

I wasn't aware of the fact, that crash test data is needed in the UK for Experimental aircrafts - have there been made any crash tests with the Europa? I thought that only certified aircrafts have to be crash tested.

Well, the cockpit design is generally no other than the DA 20 Katana or many Microlight designs (in fact almost all aircraft have full width panels) and I cannot see any differences concerning crash behavior. BTW on the club homepage you can also find a picture of a full width panel, but I don't know, if it belongs to a UK-builder http://www.theeuropaclub.org/for-builders/panel-instruments/.

As for the costs, this is only the price I relay for the producer of it (I'm not the producer), only wanted to make this clear Smile.

Hi Roland, the cost all in to get it to the uk worked out about £900 which is abit much for a panel. The full width one on the europa club site is from flight creation which is the American dealer/distributor and those Americans can do near enough what ever they like. Here in the UK everything has to go through the LAA which is governed by the CAA and any change to the instructions is classed as a modification, which means lots of paperwork, money and hoops to jump through which just isn't worth it sometimes.

Chaps,
The LAA mod process is slow but does not need to be expensive, the rate of charges to submit a new mod is in fact quite low. For a new full width panel there would be little stress justification required and no testing.

The current panel profile and stiffness have never, to my knowledge, been subjected to any form of compliance testing (nor are there any specific requirements).

The revised panel, to full width would need to be shown to have zero or negligible effect on visibility, be shown to have sufficient margins of strength in the means of fastening it to the fuselage, allow full stick movement and not impede exit in the case of an emergency.

Much of the above are common sense, wordy type submissions. The stress work involves simple sums to show the shear forces and bending moments applied to the fuselage via the attachments are good.

Frans in Holland did a nice job of his full width panel. It seems like a sensible starting point for anyone doing the same. I started the process myself a few years ago (purchasing the club spare panel) but ended up with an articulated mount for an iPad instead - see pictures of GIPOD on 'airlines' etc.

Regards
John

Hi John,

thanks for throwing some light on this. By no stretch of the imagination I could think of a Europa performing a crash test.

Indeed Frans and Ilona did a similar Job with an Aluminium front panel on their PH-DIY, although they had some more space available since it is a HI-TOP.

Hi Europa Folks,

FINALLY - as promised I add some pictures of the ready Panel installed in my Europa.

You can see, that a little finish is yet to be done on carpets etc, but I think, that you can get a good Impression of the design.

I tried to get in contact with the LAA twice by e-mail in April to get some information of what they ask for a standard-MOD. Unfortunately I didn't get a response until today.

However, if anyone is interested in spite of that, just let me know.....
