Having done modification last year, I still have about 7 inches left over (you only need about 3-1/2") from the Aircraft Spruce purchase of 4130 STEEL TUBE 1X.188 1FT
Part #: 03-06800-1 to make this modification (along with your own 5/8" bolt, etc.). $5 plus shipping cost, its yours. Add another $5 and I'll include 2 brand new belleville washers.

Subject: [Pulsar-Aviators] Nose gear failure

Clarke Coulter just reported his nose gear failed on take off. His landing was uneventful but the plane did sustain damage. His nose gear is the Aerodesigns gear with the spindle shaft welded inside a collar. Since the failure is occurring inside the collar, there is no way to inspect.

If you have one of these nose gears you should look on the forum to see what modifications others have done to make this area stronger and easy to inspect. It could save you from having to rebuild your aircraft.

I've created a folder in the Pulsar-Aviators Files section titled:
Pulsar XP - Nose Gear Modifications
http://tinyurl.com/lmf5zxh

There are three files in it:

1) Pulsar III - SkyStar Nose Wheel Exploded Parts DRAWING.jpg
... SkyStar's Pulsar III Nose Gear Design for Comparison
2) Pulsar XP - Nose Gear Modification - Drawing, Bob Hartunian.jpg
3) Pulsar XP - Nose Gear Modification - Smith-Hartunian, Koval.doc

The first is just an exploded parts diagram of the SkyStar Pulsar III
nose gear design for comparison. Something supporting a similar
weight FWF package without breaking.

I believe the second file is the modification drawing done by Bob
Hartunian and Greg Smith that Herbert inquired about.

The third is a Word.doc I threw together from clippings of posts on
Pulsar-Aviators about the Greg Smith/ Bob Hartunian modification,
and the similar but different mod done by Ron Koval. It's a rough
1st Draft. I've not designed anything, and don't claim to have any
answers, but I'm hoping Greg, Bob and Ron, and anyone else who has
done a similar modification will proof read it and offer additional
content. With enough input, perhaps we can come up with a go-to
document that owners can reference when, or hopefully before the need
arises.

I'll do the keyboard work to put together the Word.doc, if that's
what it takes. But I need some input... like, "All" the input.

If you suggest a change or addition, then flesh it out. Don't
suggest a vague idea like you think I'm going to design it. Won't
happen. I'll try to collate the document to include the good design
work and execution of others, "IF" they're okay with that; but I'm
in no position to design an aircraft landing gear. If I did, you
wouldn't want it on your plane!

*~*~*

In that Word.doc, I included a few questions that came to mind before
I even started writing. Let's start there, plus anything else you
think of.

1) Are all new 4130 steel parts to be used without additional heat
treating/ stress relieving? Bob?

2) The Pulsar XP nose gear design used a alternating stack of 6
Belleville Spring Washers, sandwiched between two thrust washers. I
don’t see the Belleville washers documented in the Smith/ Hartunian
design, but Ron Koval at least mentions them (ie, says he has extras
for sale). Are the Belleville washers still used in either or both
of those designs? For now, I’ve included them in the "Materials"
lists.

2) Skystar’s Pulsar III nose gear design appears to use two “top
hat” bushings in the vertical “Sleeve” (boss/ trunnion), one top and
one bottom. Do your designs do anything about friction other than a
little lubrication?

3) Any thoughts on a recommended torque value to use when assembling
the new pivot?

Regards,
Tim Engel

Subj: [Pulsar-Aviators] Nose gear failure

Clarke Coulter just reported his nose gear failed on take off. His
landing was uneventful but the plane did sustain damage. His nose
gear is the Aerodesigns gear with the spindle shaft welded inside a
collar. Since the failure is occurring inside the collar, there is no
way to inspect.

If you have one of these nose gears you should look on the forum to
see what modifications others have done to make this area stronger
and easy to inspect. It could save you from having to rebuild your
aircraft.
