CJ6 rear cockpit gear handle

Gentlemen,
I'll preface this by saying that I'm not at my plane and don't have my checklist etc... all info is second hand.
     Heard air escaping from the front cockpit gear handle.  Bought and replaced gear handle.  Still heard hissing.  Helper said he also heard gear escaping from rear cockpit gear lever.  Discovered that rear lever was in between neutral and gear down.... must have been bumped by a passenger.
2 questions:
1.  What position should the rear controls be in? (I assume neutral).
2.  Why would this cause leakage in the front controls or is it entirely unrelated?

Phil,
The rear gear handle should be in neutral. Think of it as direct flow to the front gear handle while in neutral. If you have or hear air hissing at either handle, it could be any one of the three gear actuators leaking. The system is designed so that air being displaced with moving of the actuators must exist at the handle. You will hear it doing so you first move the handle. Once the actuators have reached their full stops, the hissing should stop. If it does not, than the seals in the actuators are leaking. You can find out which one by doing a simple test.
One. Put the gear handle down.
2. Loosen the "B" nut (17mm wrench) on the UP side of the actuators. 
3. You can spray a little bit of soapy water on the "B" nut.
4. If you see bubbles around the nut, than the internal seal ( "O" rings really ) are leaking.

If none of them are leaking, than it might be the "O" rings in the gear handles.

Phil. The rear gear handle on the CJ overrides the front gear handle. In this manner the instructor (in the rear) can put the gear up or down regardless what the student (in the front ) does or does not do. The rear handle should be in neutral. If the front gear handle is down and a passenger raises the rear gear handle, bad things are about to happen. Most CJ owners will place the rear handle in neutral and Zip tie it over to the safety slider. In this manner you can prevent the rear passenger from overriding the front or moving the slider. The flaps and mags work the same way. In addition, the black button on top of the back control stick when pushed will release the brakes.  Again CJ drivers will drill a horizontal hole in the top of the button and put a pin through it to prevent someone from pushing the button and releasing the brakes at a most inappropriate time. When retracting the gear and reliving the pressure you will hear some hissing from the front  but it should go away. Recycling the rear handle from down to neutral only several times and leaving the rear handle in neutral can sometimes stop the hissing in the rear. On a side note. Whenever I have a qualified pilot in the rear, I  remove my zip tie off the handle and have them run my gear and flaps so as to cycle air through the valves and prevent corrosion build up  in the rear gear and flap valves. Leaving  that moisture in those rear control valves WILL lead to future issues.
